The Dalhousie University Libraries is seeking an innovative, service-oriented professional librarian to develop, deliver and assess instructional services and online learning resources, in conjunction with the Associate University Librarian (AUL), Teaching & Learning. This is a limited term position for ten months beginning January 2020. They will also assist in the provision of a range of liaison librarian services to support teaching, learning, research and outreach in the Department of English, the Centre for Learning and Teaching and the School of Information Management, working with the AUL/Head of Killam. This limited term position is appointed through the Killam Memorial Library, reporting to the AUL Planning & Head Killam Library for liaison librarian duties and matters outlined in the Collective Agreement, and reporting to the Associate University Librarian Learning & Instruction for Learning & Instruction aspects of the position.

The Role:
The Learning & Instruction Librarian provides system-wide leadership in the delivery of instructional services and the creation of online learning resources, reporting to the AUL Teaching & Learning. The development of online
instructional tutorials and other learning and instructional resources and services will involve working with colleagues from all libraries in the Dalhousie Libraries system. The Learning & Instruction Librarian will coordinate training and professional development opportunities for librarian colleagues to achieve excellence in their instruction, thereby improving library-led instruction overall at Dalhousie. Research, liaison, collections and instructional duties for assigned subject areas will be located at the Killam Memorial Library for the Department of English, the School of Information Management and the Centre for Learning and Teaching.
Main Areas of Responsibility:
- Maintain an advanced knowledge of pedagogy of online learning and instructional design
- Sustain a high-level of awareness of professional issues and current trends in information literacy
- Plan and create digital learning objects including tutorials, learning modules and instructional materials for the use of students and faculty
- Enhance the Libraries’ instructional activities and provide peer support for instructional design
- Seek opportunities to engage faculty to increase their awareness of information literacy opportunities and benefits
- Design assessment models to assess the effectiveness of IL initiatives on student learning outcomes
- Identify, analyze and report on factors that measure the impact of library instruction programs on library services, campus programs, academic departments and student learning
- Serve as Liaison Librarian to the Department of English, the School of Information Management and the Centre for Learning and Teaching and develop relationships with key departments that will advance the instruction and information literacy at Dalhousie (i.e. Academic Technology Services, Writing Centre, etc.)
- Advise clients on effectively discovering, accessing and using the full range of library and information resources available to meet teaching, learning and research needs
- Update and further develop the Libraries’ online instructional material
- Instruct and assist clients remotely and on site to discover a variety of print and electronic resources in the Libraries and on LiveHelp
- Collaborate with colleagues to ensure collection and research needs and learning outcomes are met
- Identify and implement learning analytics tools to support instruction and learning assessments
- Explore and expand the integration of information literacy content into the curriculum
- Contribute to the Dal Libraries’ strategic initiatives through participation in various projects and committees, such as teaching and learning, scholarly communication and research data management
- Investigate and implement improvements in the Libraries’ presence in Dalhousie’s course management spaces and other online learning environments
Required Qualifications:
- An MLIS degree from an ALA accredited program or equivalent
- Experience providing at least three roles outlined in the 2017 ACRL Roles and Strengths of Teaching Librarians
- In-depth, up-to-date working knowledge of specific software used to create online tutorials
- Proven technical fluency and the ability to adapt to an ever-changing online environment
- Successful instructional, research OR reference experience in an academic library
- Creativity and ability to present online and in-person library instructional material in a clear, well-designed and understandable manner
- A strong commitment to public service and excellent interpersonal skills
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Effective time management, organizational and project management skills
Preferred Qualifications:
- Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently, set and meet deadlines and adapt to new and changing situations, priorities and technologies
- Demonstrated interest in exploring innovative online learning possibilities and emerging technologies
- Familiarity in outcome assessment and evaluation of the value of online learning initiatives
- Familiarity with Humanities, Social Science and Management resources (particularly for English, Information Management and the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning)
- Proven ability to work independently and collegially as a productive member of a team
- Proven ability to promote respect and inclusion by working successfully with a wide variety of people and encouraging their participation and involvement
Salary and Benefits:
Rank and salary are dependent upon qualifications and experience and subject to the terms of the Dalhousie Faculty Association Collective Agreement. The position will not be filled at a rank higher than Librarian I.
