About the University of Toronto Libraries:
The University of Toronto Libraries (UTL) system is the largest academic library in Canada and is fourth among peer institutions in North America, behind just Harvard, Yale and Columbia. The system consists of 42 libraries located on three university campuses: St. George, Mississauga, and Scarborough. This array of college libraries, special collections, and specialized libraries and information centres supports the teaching and research requirements of 300 graduate programs, over 70 professional programs, and more than 700 undergraduate degree programs. More than 150,000 new print volumes are acquired each year. The Libraries data centre houses more than 200 servers with a storage capacity of 1.5 petabytes.
About the Department of Chemistry:
The Department of Chemistry is a large research and teaching intensive department within the Faculty of Arts and Science. Undergraduate courses in the areas of introductory, analytical, biological, environmental, inorganic, materials, organic, physical, and theoretical chemistry are offered to both chemistry specialist and other students. Research in these areas is accomplished by both graduate and undergraduate chemistry students in state-of-the-art facilities located in a two wing building at the centre of the St. George Campus. The chemistry library enhances both the teaching and research missions of the department.
The Opportunity:
The University of Toronto seeks an adaptable, forward-thinking librarian with a strong service orientation to join the Department of Chemistry as the Chemistry Librarian.
Responsibilities:
- As a solo librarian, manage all operations of the A.D. Allen Chemistry Library, including public service, research and teaching support, website creation and maintenance and the physical space
- Proactively engage with faculty, staff, and students to enhance the knowledge of and access to library resources and services
- Partner with faculty to offer curriculum-embedded instruction and tutorials, with a focus on first year students
- Support students in the use of databases, citation management, and chemistry relevant licenced software such as ChemDraw
- Assist with Department of Chemistry outreach activities, such as Chemistry Scholars’ Day and Ask a Laureate
- Responsible for collection development, maintenance, and assessment for Chemistry for both the University of Toronto Libraries and the Chemistry Library
- Actively partner with faculty, the Office of Research and the Scholarly Communications and Copyright Office to explore evolving scholarly publishing, research data management and open science practices, such as the investigation of electronic laboratory notebooks and open access archiving in compliance with the Tri-Council and other funding agency requirements.
- Manage the Scientific Equipment Archive and coordinate its incorporation into the University of Toronto Scientific Instruments Collection.
- Hire and supervise casual staff
- Actively participate in relevant library or campus-wide committees or working groups
- Work collaboratively with Chemistry-focused librarians at the Scarborough and Mississauga campuses in areas such as collection development and assessment, orientation and software support
Required Qualifications:
- A degree from an accredited Master’s level program in library and information studies
- An undergraduate degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, material science, physical, biochemical or molecular sciences
- Demonstrated interest in, and knowledge of, scholarly publishing, open science and research data management
- Demonstrated research skills and knowledge of key databases and information sources in the Physical Sciences
- Proven ability to work collaboratively with diverse group of stakeholders with a varied range of interests
- Knowledge of principles of information literacy and how they can be applied in an academic setting
- Excellent oral and written communication skills; demonstrated training and presentation skills
- Excellent time management, organizational, and problem-solving skills with the ability to lead multiple concurrent projects
- Capacity to thrive in a dynamic environment, with shifting needs and priorities of library and stakeholders
Preferred Qualifications:
- Relevant experience in an academic library setting
- Graduate degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, material science, physical, biochemical or molecular sciences
- Experience supporting the development of diverse, inclusive, accessible learning environments and programming
- Experience teaching and developing and delivering academic skills support
- Experience with Drupal
Salary and Terms of Appointment: This is a Permanent Status Stream position.
Salary and appointment level are based on experience and qualifications.
Minimum salary: LIB I: $68,737; LIB II: $71,721; LIB III: $91,787 annually (Salary is dependent on rank at hire and qualifications).
