The University of Toronto Libraries (UTL) system is the largest academic library in Canada and is fourth among peer institutions in North America, behind just Harvard, Yale and Columbia. The system consists of 42 libraries located on three university campuses: St. George, Mississauga, and Scarborough. This array of college libraries, special collections, and specialized libraries and information centres supports the teaching and research requirements of 300 graduate programs, over 70 professional programs, and more than 700 undergraduate degree programs. More than 150,000 new print volumes are acquired each year. The Libraries data centre houses more than 200 servers with a storage capacity of 1.5 petabytes.

The Opportunity

Scholars Portal is seeking to hire a Dataverse Preservation and Policy Coordinator who has strong technical writing and administrative skills and is eager to work on a pan-Canadian scale. Launched in 2012, the Scholars Portal Dataverse repository provides Canadian university libraries and affiliated researchers with a place to find, access, store, and publish research data. Hosted research data resides on servers at the University of Toronto Libraries, and adheres to industry standards for digital data management and information security. Moving forward, in collaboration with community partners at the regional and national level, there is a need to coordinate the implementation of best practice policies related to deposit and long-term preservation of research data in the repository. The Coordinator will be a member of the Dataverse team at Scholars Portal, reporting to the service manager. The successful candidate will work closely with the Digital Preservation Librarian, as well as community partners, and the national Portage Dataverse North and Preservation Experts Groups, conducting outreach and developing a framework for documentation and training in support of CoreTrustSeal Certification.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Support and provide guidance to Dataverse service members on meeting the standards of repository certification

  • Assist with the development of an online training and outreach strategy for policy implementation and repository certification
  • Develop, organize, and manage webinars and virtual workshops related to repository policies and certification
  • Support members with repository self-assessment throughout, including direct training and consultancy as needed
  • Document the Dataverse national repository’s core functionality, policies and procedures, and workflows using the CoreTrustSeal standard
  • Facilitate formal evaluations with CoreTrustSeal auditors
  • Develop a preservation policy for Dataverse-based collections in collaboration with the Digital Preservation Librarian and repository team
  • Advise on additional preservation strategies and services for Dataverse collections, such as the application of the Dataverse-Archivematica integration
  • Assist in updating and maintaining user-facing documentation for Dataverse
  • Assist with formalizing policies and, developing new policies to support Dataverse operations
  • Generate a report on lessons learned with recommendations for strategies going forward

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

An accredited degree from a Master’s level program in library and information studies

  • Knowledge of key principles and concepts related to research data management and digital preservation
  • Experience planning meetings and/or organizing events
  • Proven diplomacy and consensus building skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing in English
  • Ability to prioritize, plan and organize work to meet deadlines successfully
  • Excellent organizational, time management, collaboration, and problem-solving skills

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Relevant professional experience related to research data management and digital preservation

  • A demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in both official languages (English and French)
  • Proven experience in project management
  • Demonstrated experience with technical writing

MINIMUM SALARY:  Salary and rank based on experience and qualifications. The successful candidate must qualify for appointment at the Librarian I or Librarian II rank. This is a six (6) month contractually limited maternity leave term appointment.
