The University of Toronto Libraries (UTL) system is the largest academic library in Canada and is fourth
among peer institutions in North America, behind just Harvard, Yale and Columbia. The system consists of 42 libraries located on three university campuses: St. George, Mississauga, and Scarborough. This array of college libraries, special collections, and specialized libraries and information centres supports the teaching and research requirements of 300 graduate programs, over 70 professional programs, and more than 700 undergraduate degree programs. The Opportunity
The Gerstein Science Information Centre invites applications for an innovative and service-oriented librarian for the position of Liaison and Education Librarian.   As part of our well-established liaison program, the successful candidate will provide dynamic, engaging information literacy instruction to Rehabilitation departments (Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Speech Language Therapy), the MD Program, and the Institute of Medical Sciences within the Faculty of Medicine as well as the Faculty of Kinesiology and Physical Education.  The successful candidate will also provide research support through our robust consultation service, Systematic and Scoping Review Service and other reference and research services. The individual will be responsible for maintaining and developing close, collaborative and proactive liaison relationships with faculty, staff and students.
The Gerstein Science Information Centre is the largest academic health sciences library in Canada and has long-standing close liaison ties with the health science faculties and maintains a large science and health science collection both online and in print.  It has collaborative relationships with the hospital library community through the Health Science Information Consortium of Toronto.  Gerstein is also a hub for science communication events and entrepreneurial innovation.
The successful candidate will:

  • Work closely with colleagues within Gerstein, across the library system and within the hospital libraries
  • Work with students and faculty to maintain a curriculum-embedded program of instruction in the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Kinesiology and Physical Education.
  • Teach critical information literacy and research skills
  • Conduct in-depth reference and research consultations with students and faculty
  • Assist with systematic reviews and other knowledge syntheses
  • Identify opportunities for outreach and marketing of library services and resources with an eye towards continuous improvement
  • Remain current with and implement, as required, emerging concepts in scholarly communication, research data management, and instructional technology
  • Serve on library and faculty committees and working groups as necessary

Required Qualifications

  • A degree from an accredited Masters level program in library and information studies
  • Outstanding interpersonal, organizational, presentation, and communication skills
  • Awareness of the importance of inclusivity, diversity and accessibility in academic libraries
  • Demonstrated research skills and knowledge of key databases and information sources in the health sciences
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the principles of effective teaching and information literacy and how they can be applied in an academic setting, both online and in-person.
  • Demonstrated flexibility, creativity, and ability to innovate and adapt in a changing environment
  • Strong initiative and ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities effectively
  • Ability to work effectively as both a team member and independently
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Outstanding service orientation and commitment to supporting patrons and colleagues

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in a liaison capacity in an academic health science or hospital library
  • Knowledge of research methodologies such as knowledge syntheses and knowledge translation
  • Experience building solid relationships with faculty
  • Experience offering reference and consultative assistance to both graduate and undergraduate students
  • Outreach experience promoting library services and resources
  • Undergraduate or graduate degree in the health, life, physical or related sciences
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning

 Salary and Terms of Appointment: This is a Contractually Limited Appointment.

Salary and appointment level are based upon experience and qualifications. It is anticipated that this position will be filled at the Librarian I or II level, subject to review and experience. This appointment is for one year as a parental leave replacement with the possibility of extension.
Minimum salary: LIB I: $68,737; LIB II: $71,721 (Salary is dependent on rank at hire and qualifications).
