The University of Toronto Libraries system is the largest academic library in Canada and is consistently ranked in the top ten among academic research libraries in North America.  The system consists of 42 libraries located on three university campuses: St. George, Mississauga, and Scarborough. This array of college libraries, special collections, and specialized libraries and information centres supports the teaching and research requirements of over 300 graduate programs, more than 70 professional programs, and about 700 undergraduate degree programs. In addition to more than 15 million volumes in 341 languages, the library system currently provides access to millions of electronic resources in various forms and over 31,000 linear metres of archival material. More than 150,000 new print volumes are acquired each year. The Libraries’ data centre houses more than 500 servers with a storage capacity of 1.5 petabytes.

The Opportunity

The Associate Librarian (AL), Collections & Research Services, one of two ALs, will work closely with colleagues within the Library and across the UTM campus and university community to develop an overall vision for academic library services and will develop these services to support the strategic plans of UTM and the University of Toronto Library System.

Reporting to the UTM Chief Librarian, the Associate Librarian, Collections & Research Services, is a member of the UTM Library’s senior leadership team and has overall responsibility for Library collections and research services, including:

  • collection development and management
  • acquisitions, cataloguing, metadata creation, and serials management
  • resource sharing
  • the Visual Resources Library
  • digital scholarship, archives, and special collections
  • scholarly communications, including open access, RDM, and copyright
  • GIS/data and data visualization
  • research services including support for scoping/systematic reviews and bibliometrics

The Collections and Research Services team currently consists of 7 librarians and 8 staff positions.

The Associate Librarian will provide direction and leadership within the UTM Library, exploring emerging trends in collections, digital scholarship, and the delivery of research services for faculty, staff, and students.

The Associate Librarian works closely with the Association Librarian, Library and Learning Services to ensure that the work of collections and research services integrates with the work being done across the others units of the Library.

The Associate Librarian works closely with colleagues across the University of Toronto Library System in the areas of collections and research services to build excellent collections and develop strong library services across the University and represents the UTM Library while working with campus, provincial and national partners.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the management, operations, coordination, and direction of collection management, digital scholarship, and research services units
  • Provides advice, analysis, policy interpretation, and recommendations for implementing initiatives
  • Working closely with library colleagues, develops strategic directions and ensures their Teams’ priorities, goals, and objectives are realized
  • Ensures necessary resources are provided for units within Collections & Research Services to ensure their goals and objectives can be met
  • Monitors UTM’s academic priorities and growth to develop services and collections in support of teaching, learning, and research
  • Oversees the acquisitions budget, approval plan profiles, license information, collection policies, etc., in consultation with other library staff and librarians
  • Represents the Library on campus, tri-campus, and university-wide committees
  • Represents the UTM Library in UofT Libraries’ planning in the areas of collections and research services
  • Contributes to the library profession through scholarly publications, presentation, and participation in the work of professional organizations
  • Working in conjunction with the Chief Librarian and Associate Librarian, Library & Learning Services, UTM, collaborates on library-wide strategic planning, policy formulation, establishing priorities, allocating the budget, and space planning for library services and storage
  • Provides leadership, mentoring, and coaching to departmental librarians, and staff, designing and supporting appropriate developmental plans that support both the individual and Library’s objectives
  • Provides leadership and support to the team in the Visual Resources Library

Required Qualifications:

  • A degree from an accredited Master’s level program in library and information studies
  • Demonstrated commitment to the values of inclusivity, diversity and accessibility
  • Relevant professional management experience and demonstrated strong and progressive leadership, with the ability to lead staff through organizational change and strategic planning and priorities shifts
  • Excellent project management skills: demonstrated planning, analytical, budgetary and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple concurrent tasks with major impact on critical operations of the organization
  • Supervisory experience including the assessment and training of staff and librarians is required, preferably in an academic library
  • Familiarity with current trends in academic libraries and higher education, and in innovative approaches to collections and research services, including shared/cooperative collection building and preservation initiatives
  • Understanding of all stages in the collection lifecycle in digital, print and other formats
  • Understanding of the scholarly publishing landscape
  • Experience developing and managing print and digital collections including maintaining approval plans, understanding license agreements, and negotiating with vendors
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills; ability to communicate and collaborate with diverse audiences and networks
  • Strong evidence of a growth mindset: a librarian who demonstrates flexibility, creativity and resilience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Professional experience in acquisitions, cataloguing, and/or collection development
  • Knowledge of and experience with digital scholarship, archives and special collections
  • Strong understanding of research services and supports such as GIS/Data, Scholarly Communications, and bibliographic metrics

Salary and Terms of Appointment:

This is a Permanent Status Stream position to be filled at a Librarian III level.
