About the University of Toronto Libraries

The University of Toronto Libraries system is the largest academic library in Canada and is consistently ranked in the top ten among academic research libraries in North America.  The system consists of 42 libraries located on three university campuses: St. George, Mississauga, and Scarborough. This array of college libraries, special collections, and specialized libraries and information centres supports the teaching and research requirements of over 300 graduate programs, more than 70 professional programs, and about 700 undergraduate degree programs. In addition to more than 15 million volumes in 341 languages, the library system currently provides access to millions of electronic resources in various forms and over 31,000 linear metres of archival material. More than 150,000 new print volumes are acquired each year. The Libraries’ data centre houses more than 500 servers with a storage capacity of 1.5 petabytes.

The Opportunity

The University of Toronto seeks an adaptable, forward-thinking librarian with a strong service orientation to join the Scholarly Communications and Copyright Office (SCCO). The successful applicant will work closely with the Head, Scholarly Communications and Copyright Office to plan, implement, and promote services that support scholarly publishing, open science, and copyright education at the University of Toronto. This position will require internal consultation and liaison with faculty, university administration and library colleagues, and external consultation and liaison with other universities, agencies supporting open access, and scholarly publishing & copyright groups. 

Representative duties and projects may include: 

  • Engaging in University wide education and outreach (online and in person) with university administration, faculty, students, and library colleagues, related to a variety of scholarly communication and copyright issues in teaching and research, which includes but is not limited to: author rights, trends in scholarly publishing, licensing, affordable course content, and open educational resources
  • Management of the increasingly popular Syllabus Service and copyright compliance efforts (such as transactional licencing) related to use of material for teaching and research purposes; early work will be focused on UTL’s transition to new library services platform (Alma), and implementation of new reading list solution (Leganto)
  • Development and maintenance of SCCO reporting efforts that aids in departmental and library-wide service planning
  • Conducts research and provides guidance on copyright and related issues to a wide range of users, as appropriate 
  • Participates in relevant library or campus-wide committees or working groups, as appropriate
  • Monitoring and reporting on trends, legal requirements, and best practices related to copyright and scholarly publishing
  • Collaboration with library colleagues and relevant stakeholders to identify, develop, and implement services and training that strengthen scholarly communications and copyright competencies campus-wide

Required Qualifications

  • A degree from an accredited Masters level program in library and information studies
  • Demonstrated commitment to the values of inclusivity, diversity and accessibility
  • Demonstrated interest in, and knowledge of, scholarly publishing and research lifecycle; understanding of the evolving issues and emerging practices in scholarly sharing and open science 
  • Knowledge of Canadian copyright law, regulations, and practices, particularly as they pertain to higher education 
  • Proven ability to foster respect and inclusion by working successfully with a wide variety of people/stakeholders and encouraging their participation and involvement
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; demonstrated training and presentation skills
  • Excellent time management, organizational, and problem-solving skills with the ability to lead multiple concurrent projects 
  • Demonstrated flexibility, creativity and ability to adapt to a changing environment, where needs and priorities of the library and stakeholders may shift rapidly

Preferred Qualifications

  • Understanding of the workflows related to eResource acquisitions and licensing practices 
  • Experience coordinating electronic reserves services and knowledge of trends and issues related to the support of learning and teaching material 
  • Experience engaging in collaborative projects and programs at the local, regional, national, and/or international level 

Salary and Terms of Appointment: This is a Contractually Limited Appointment.

Salary and appointment level are based upon experience and qualifications. It is anticipated that this position will be filled at the Librarian I or II level, subject to review and experience. This appointment is for one year as a parental leave replacement with the possibility of extension.

Minimum salary: LIB I: $68,737; LIB II: $71,721 (Salary is dependent on rank at hire and qualifications).
