The University of Toronto Libraries (UTL) system is the largest academic library in Canada and is consistently ranked among the top-10 research libraries in North America. The Li Koon Chun Finance Learning Centre (FLC) is a unit of the UTM Library and is located within the Innovation Complex, which houses the Departments of Management and Economics, the graduate programs affiliated with the Institute for Management & Innovation (IMI) and ICUBE, the campus hub for entrepreneurship. The FLC actively supports the learning, teaching, and research needs of the Management, Economics, IMI and ICUBE communities and the broader campus while functioning as a focal point for students interested in finance, investing, and business.
The IMI Liaison Librarian will be embedded within the FLC, together with the IMI Reference & Research Specialist. The two roles will also be supported by part-time FLC Student Assistants. The IMI Liaison Librarian will supervise the IMI Reference & Research Specialist and will report to the Head, IMI Library Services & Instruction. They are expected to work closely with all members of the FLC team.
The Opportunity
The University of Toronto Mississauga Library invites applications from experienced, innovative, and service- oriented librarians for the position of IMI Liaison Librarian. The successful candidate will provide both online and in-person dynamic, engaging information literacy instruction in areas such as finance, accounting, human resource management, strategy, management and economics, with a focus on supporting undergraduate Management, Economics, and Business Minor in Science programs. This work will involve delivering or supporting instruction in specialized finance, accounting, and other software independently or in partnership with faculty. The successful candidate will also offer instructional support to ICUBE’s community and provide leadership for the FLC’s successful co-curricular instruction program.
As a part of our well-established liaison program, the successful candidate will deliver in-person and online reference and research consultation services, and develop and manage UTM library collections within their portfolio. This individual will be responsible for developing close, collaborative, and proactive relationships with faculty, staff, and key student groups within their liaison areas.
The successful candidate will plan and implement the FLC’s online and offline communications, in collaboration with other FLC and UTM Library staff and librarians.
With strategic guidance from the Head, IMI Library Services & Instruction, the IMI Librarian will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the FLC. As part of this role, they will also oversee all aspects of the FLC Student Assistant program, including recruiting, hiring, training, budgeting, and general management.
Required Qualifications
• A degree from an accredited Master’s level program in library and information studies
• Demonstrated commitment to the values of inclusivity, diversity, and accessibility
• Experience working as a business librarian, preferably in an academic library
• Demonstrated project management and planning experience, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities
• Strong teaching and presentation skills
• Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to build and maintain productive relationships with faculty and staff
• Ability to work independently and in a team environment
• Knowledge of Bloomberg, FactSet or other specialized finance and accounting databases and software and a commitment to developing and maintaining expertise with these tools
• Relevant collection development experience
• Strong Excel and Office 365 or office productivity software skills
• Comfortable with new technology and trouble-shooting software and hardware
• Strong evidence of a growth mindset: a librarian who demonstrates flexibility, initiative and resilience
Preferred Qualifications
• An undergraduate degree in business and/or relevant professional business or finance certifications (e.g. Canadian Securities Course, CFA Level I)
• Experience working in an academic library environment
• Experience managing technology
• Experience working in an embedded library service
• Comfortable with new technology and trouble-shooting software and hardware
• Experience with supervising staff and student employees, particularly in a unionized environment
• Experience with social media, web and digital content design and/or development, and library communications
Salary and Terms of Appointment
This is a Permanent Status Stream position to be filled at a Librarian II/III level.
Rank and salary will be commensurate with experience and academic/professional qualifications.
