Information Services Technician (Part-Time) – Bradford West Gwillimbury Public Library

The Bradford West Gwillimbury Public Library is a community-focused, single branch Library  serving a diverse population of 35,500. The community includes both urban and rural areas with  the majority of the population centered in the town of Bradford, which is located on the fringe of  the GTA and adjacent to the Holland Marsh. Easily accessible from Highways 400, 27 and 11,  Bradford is a growing community, reflected in the increasing demand for library services.  

The Library has an opening for a part-time contract Information Services Technician. Reporting to  the Information Services Librarian, the Library is seeking a Library Technician or Librarian who:  

• Is tech-savvy and ready to assist patrons with their phones, computers and e-readers, and  able to tackle printing challenges large and small  
• Is experienced and comfortable working with teenagers 
• Is passionate about reference, and whole collection advisory  
• Is dedicated to providing excellent customer service to patrons of all ages • Will support mission, vision and values of Bradford West Gwillimbury Public Library;  • Will comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations, and the Corporate  Health & Safety Policy and related procedures.  

This position is expected to start June 21, 2021 and end December 17, 2021. Shifts and hours will  vary, working up to 15 hours per week, and may include evenings and weekends. The rate of pay is  $27.51 per hour.  

Qualifications: 

• Library Techniques Diploma from a recognized college or equivalent 
• Experience with computer related software 
• Excellent customer service skills 
• Previous library experience is considered an asset 
• First aid and CPR are considered an asset 
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to foster cooperative working  relationships and maintaining diplomacy and integrity

POSITION DESCRIPTION

POSITION SUMMARY 

The Information Services/Interlibrary Loan Technician provides information and readers’  advisory services to the public. Maintains effective interlibrary loan services. Oversees the  security of the public areas of the building. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

• Provide customer-focused service to all Library patrons, including reference service to  researchers and students at all educational levels. Offer readers’/viewers’/listeners’  advisory services and assists genealogists and researchers in the Local History Room  and Archives. 
• Maintain effective interlibrary loan services. 
• Maintain the periodicals collection. 
• Track the return of interlibrary loan materials and follows up on long overdue and  missing items. 
• Maintain interlibrary loan statistics. 
• Aid and instruct patrons with questions concerning technology and devices, and assist  computer lab and photocopier users with software and printing issues. Troubleshoot  problems with audio-visual equipment in meeting and program rooms. 
• Promote Library, Town and community programs and services to the public. 
• Select, evaluate, and deselect Library materials including: books, CDs, DVDs, audio  books, electronic books, magazines, and other formats.  
• Demonstrate broad knowledge of authors, literature, publishers, popular culture and  trends and consults a variety of review sources, in combination with informed judgement,  use of analytical software, and knowledge of the community to evaluate materials,  ensuring that the collection is relevant, inclusive, and current. 
• Enable the peaceful enjoyment of the facility for all patrons, by ensuring the Library’s  Rules of Conduct, Internet Access Policy, Food and Drink Policy, among other policies,  are followed by patrons. Determines and applies appropriate response to disruptive  patrons. 
• Maintain a calm professional manner in difficult situations and applies effective  communication techniques. 
• Oversee the security of the public areas of the building. Notify Facilities of mechanical/maintenance/safety issues in the building. 
• Demonstrate a broad knowledge of the Library’s collection, encompassing print and  electronic, and in-house as well as applicable external resources. 
• Collect statistics concerning Information Services and provide input to the Information  Services Librarian regarding methods for improving services. 
• Keep abreast of technical, regulatory, community and management developments  relevant to public Library service and participate in professional forums that advance  public Library service. 
• Maintain confidentiality under the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of  Privacy Act and other related and applicable legislation.

QUALIFICATIONS 

• Library Techniques Diploma from a recognized college or equivalent. 
• A minimum of 2 years reference experience in public Libraries or a Masters of Library and  Information (MLIS) from an ALA accredited university. 
• Knowledge of reference interview and readers’ advisory techniques. 
• Familiarity with the range and scope of information, both electronic and non-electronic found  in a public Library. 
• Knowledge of the dynamics of information retrieval and information storage techniques as  they relate to information databases.  
• Ability to use a wide range of Library-oriented information sources. 
• Familiarity with and ability to operate, industry-standard software and a willingness to learn  Library software packages and reference databases. 
• Familiarity with computer workstations and related software.  
• Proven knowledge of, and experience with, emerging technology. 
• Demonstrates strong interpersonal communication skills, including welcoming manner,  active listening and nonjudgmental response.  
• Strong oral and written communications.  
• Ability to maintain cooperative and courteous relationships with other staff, Library users,  and staff of various organizations and businesses.  
• Ability to work days, evenings and weekends.  
• Satisfactory Police Record Check.
• Previous experience with interlibrary loan procedures is an asset.
