Manager, Library and Archives – Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity 

The Opportunity 

The Manager, Library and Archives (MLA) provides leadership and direction and is accountable for  planning and managing the development and operations of the Paul D. Fleck Library and  Archives. The MLA will be concerned with five general areas: human resource management, facility  management, collection management, technology management, and financial management. In  addition, the Manager will conduct the normal activities of the library professional: reference,  collection development, cataloging, outreach, and research to keep abreast of trends in library and  archives. 

Specific Accountabilities 

∙ Define the long term objectives of the library and archives in consultation with senior management of Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity 
∙ Develop operational plans for the library and archives that follow its long term objectives
∙ Develop acquisition strategies for purchasing new library materials in collaboration with the programming directors and managers across campus 
∙ Acquire new materials for the collection to meet library objectives 
∙ Develop and review (when required or requested) library and archives policies ∙ Identify financial requirements of the library and archives and develop and operate within a  budget to meet them 
∙ Develop and maintain good working relationships with other libraries, both within the province  and nationally by developing appropriate communications channels and through membership in  the appropriate societies 
∙ Respond to research and reference requests requiring specialized knowledge related to program  offerings, specialized library tools and external resources 
∙ Develop outreach strategies and programming to encourage engagement with the library and  archives services and collections 
∙ Select, train and develop human resources to fulfill the departmental, operational and service mandate of the library and archives. Have a sound knowledge of the Collective Agreement and ensure compliance. 
∙ Supervise the Archivist and Records Manager in the maintenance of the historical record of Banff Centre and in the monitoring of the confidentiality and security of the records in the care of the archives 
∙ Recruit, mentor, and supervise library and archives practicum participants ∙ Manage the Library and Archives website page(s) 
∙ Work with the Rights Management group to oversee the development and communication of copyright policies and procedures for Banff Centre 
∙ Evaluate donated materials to the library collections for possible addition ∙ Monitor, plan and develop space use within the library facility 
∙ Investigate and acquire capital equipment for library use 
∙ Oversee, with direct participation where necessary, the information technology resources used  in the library and/or facilitated by the library (e.g. remote access to online catalogue and electronic resources, etc.); some of this work may also be in partnership with other departments (e.g. Information Technology and Services) and outside partnerships or projects. ∙ Manage and administer license agreements for collections and services 
∙ Participate in province-wide library organizations (AAAL, TAL, etc.) 
∙ Gather, correlate and report Library statistics for both in-house use and trend analysis, as well  as for external reporting as required
∙ Be an advocate for the library and archives across the institution and beyond 

Qualification and Educational Requirements 

∙ 5+ years of relevant work experience 
∙ ALA accredited Masters’ in library and information science 
∙ Knowledge at the specialist level in one or more of the arts programming areas of Banff Centre (performing arts, music, art history, visual arts, literature) 
∙ Ability to effectively lead and manage a team 
∙ Forward-thinking with an ability to anticipate and prepare for changing demands for and uses of archival information 
∙ Good communication skills with the ability to relate to and encourage a wide range of users
∙ Strong research skills in order to help users’ access materials 
∙ Keen attention to detail and accuracy 
∙ The ability to anticipate and respond to the changing needs of a complex institutional  environment 
∙ The ability to work independently and as part of a team 
∙ Competence in administrative procedures and project management skills ∙ Ability to carry out independent research 

Employment Terms & Benefits 

∙ In accordance with the terms of employment governing Management/PSP employees, this is a salaried, permanent position, subject to a 6 month probationary period. 
∙ Working 37.5 hours per week, the annual salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. 
∙ The successful candidate will have access to a range of benefits through Alberta Blue Cross and will be eligible to participate in our defined benefit pension plan.
