About the University of Toronto Libraries

The University of Toronto Libraries system is the largest academic library in Canada and is consistently ranked in the top ten among academic research libraries in North America. The system consists of 42 libraries located on three university campuses: St. George, Mississauga, and Scarborough. This array of college libraries, special collections, and specialized libraries and information centres supports the teaching and research requirements of over 300 graduate programs, more than 70 professional programs, and about 700 undergraduate degree programs. In addition to more than 15 million volumes in 341 languages, the library system currently provides access to millions of electronic resources in various forms and over 31,000 linear metres of archival material. More than 150,000 new print volumes are acquired each year. The Libraries’ data centre houses more than 500 servers with a storage capacity of 1.5 petabytes.

About the University College Library

University College (UC) is the founding college of the University of Toronto. The University College Library supports the UC-affiliated academic programs and serves UC students, faculty, and staff, while also welcoming all members of the University of Toronto community. The UC Library has a collection of over 20,000 books, many of them related to the UC-affiliated academic programs: Canadian Studies; Cognitive Science; Drama, Theatre and Performance Studies; Health Studies; and Sexual Diversity Studies. The Library also features a Bestsellers section; a Graphic Novels section; a Writing, Academic Skills & Careers section; and the Al Purdy Collection of Canadian literature. The UC Library has one librarian and a team of part-time student employees.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Principal of University College, the Librarian will direct and manage the services, resources, and staff of the University College Library. This is a six-month research-leave-replacement position, which offers an excellent opportunity to gain diverse experience in academic librarianship.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Librarian will be responsible for all aspects of the UC Library (with some assistance from student staff), including:

• Collection development (selecting and ordering books); derived cataloguing and materials processing; and circulation
• Managing the UC Library’s use of U of T’s Library Services Platform, Ex-Libris
• Supervising part-time student library assistants
• Serving as the liaison librarian for (a) Canadian Studies and (b) Drama, Theatre and Performance Studies
• Library instruction requested for courses in UC-affiliated academic programs
• Reference/in-depth research assistance
• Proactive outreach to UC faculty, staff, and students, and other UC Library users, including managing the UC Library’s website and Twitter account
• Participating in the wider UC community via the UC Writing Awards Committee, University College Council, the UC Senior Common Room, and selected UC events
• Participating in selected University of Toronto Libraries committee meetings and events
• Monitoring (and liaising with colleagues about) any issues that arise with library facilities or technology

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• An accredited degree from a Master’s level program in library and information studies
• Demonstrated commitment to the values of inclusivity, diversity and accessibility
• Enthusiasm for academic librarianship
• Strong familiarity with the principles of derived cataloguing
• Familiarity with the University of Toronto library system
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• The ability to work well independently
• The ability to provide leadership to a team of student staff

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Relevant experience in an academic library setting
• Familiarity with Ex-Libris products: Alma and Primo
• Familiarity with University College
• Academic or work background related to one or more of: Canadian Studies; Cognitive Science; Drama, Theatre and Performance Studies; Health Studies; Sexual Diversity Studies; recreational reading collections

MINIMUM SALARY:

Salary and rank based on experience and qualifications. The successful candidate must qualify for appointment at the Librarian I rank.
