The University of Toronto Libraries system is the largest academic library in Canada and is consistently ranked in the top ten among academic research libraries in North America. The system consists of 42 libraries located on three university campuses: St. George, Mississauga, and Scarborough. This array of college libraries, special collections, and specialized libraries and information centres supports the teaching and research requirements of over 300 graduate programs, more than 70 professional programs, and about 700 undergraduate degree programs. In addition to more than 15 million volumes in 341 languages, the library system currently provides access to millions of electronic resources in various forms and over 31,000 linear metres of archival material. More than 150,000 new print volumes are acquired each year. The Libraries’ data centre houses more than 500 servers with a storage capacity of 1.5 petabytes.
The Opportunity
The Gerstein Science Information Centre invites applications for an innovative and service-oriented librarian for the position of Faculty Liaison, Instruction and Communications Librarian. As part of our well-established liaison program, the successful candidate will provide dynamic, engaging information literacy instruction to the Dalla Lana School of Public Health and the Joint Centre for Bioethics. The successful candidate will also manage the Gerstein communication portfolio, and provide research support through our robust consultation service, Systematic and Scoping Review Collaboration, and other reference and research services. The individual will be responsible for maintaining and developing close, collaborative, and proactive liaison relationships with faculty, staff, and students.
The Gerstein Science Information Centre is the largest academic health sciences library in Canada. It has long-standing close liaison ties with the health science faculties and maintains a large science and health science collection both online and in print. It has collaborative relationships with the hospital library community through the Health Science Information Consortium of Toronto. Gerstein is also a hub for science communication events and entrepreneurial innovation.
The successful candidate will:
• Work closely with colleagues within Gerstein and across the library system • Work with students and faculty to maintain a curriculum-embedded program of instruction • Teach critical information literacy and research skills
• Conduct in-depth reference and research consultations with students and faculty • Assist and collaborate with scoping reviews and other knowledge syntheses • Identify opportunities for outreach and marketing of library services and resources with an eye towards continuous improvement
• Act as communications and social media lead for Gerstein, planning and delivering campaigns and messaging in collaboration with Gerstein and UTL staff
• Remain current with and implement, as required, emerging concepts in scholarly communication, research data management, and instructional technology
• Serve on library and faculty committees and working groups as necessary
Required Qualifications
• A degree from an accredited Masters level program in library and information studies • Outstanding interpersonal, presentation, and communication skills
• Awareness of the importance of equity, inclusivity, diversity, and accessibility in academic libraries
• Demonstrated research skills and knowledge of key databases and information sources in the health sciences
• Demonstrated knowledge of the principles of effective teaching and information literacy both online and in-person
• Experience managing internal or external communications such as drafting written materials, preparing presentations and visual materials, and communicating with stakeholders
• Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage a diverse workload
• Ability to work effectively as both a team member and independently
• Outstanding service orientation and commitment to supporting patrons and colleagues
Preferred Qualifications
• Academic background in the health sciences or equivalent library professional or work experience in these subject areas
• Knowledge of research methodologies such as knowledge syntheses and knowledge translation
• Experience offering research and consultative assistance to both graduate and undergraduate students
• Experience with conducting outreach including promoting library services and resources • Knowledge of best practices for managing social media (Twitter, Instagram, Youtube, Facebook)
• Experience with graphic design principles and software
• Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning and professional development
Salary and Terms of Appointment:
Rank and salary will be commensurate with experience and academic/professional qualifications. It is anticipated that this position will be filled at the Librarian I or II level, subject to review and experience. The appointment is for a contractually limited term appointment as a parental leave replacement. Minimum salary: LIB I: $69,356; LIB II: $72,367 (Salary is dependent on rank at hire and qualifications).
