The University of Toronto Libraries system is the largest academic library in Canada and is consistently ranked in the top ten among academic research libraries in North America. The system consists of 42 libraries located on three university campuses: St. George, Mississauga, and Scarborough. This array of college libraries, special collections, and specialized libraries and information centres supports the teaching and research requirements of over 300 graduate programs, more than 70 professional programs, and about 700 undergraduate degree programs. In addition to more than 15 million volumes in 341 languages, the library system currently provides access to millions of electronic resources in various forms and over 31,000 linear metres of archival material. More than 150,000 new print volumes are acquired each year. The Libraries’ data centre houses more than 500 servers with a storage capacity of 1.5 petabytes.
The Opportunity
Scholars Portal (SP), a digital library initiative sponsored by the Ontario Council of University Libraries (OCUL), and a division of the University of Toronto Libraries, seeks to hire a Metadata & Data Services Librarian who has strong technical skills, demonstrated familiarity with metadata best practices in libraries, and is eager to work with diverse stakeholder groups at the local, regional, and national levels. As part of the Data Services team, the position will work closely with programmers, systems analysts, data specialists, data producers, service managers, and participate in community outreach and engagement with librarians, staff, and students at member institutions. The primary areas of responsibility will involve coordination for a large and diverse set of data collections (e.g. geospatial data, historical maps, social survey data, scientific data, and research data, etc.), metadata databases, and support for SP Data Services including ODESI (https://odesi.ca), a social science survey data repository and, Scholars GeoPortal (http://geo.scholarsportal.info), a map-based discovery tool and geospatial data repository. Some collaboration with SP and other library staff on related projects as needed.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Coordinate metadata for data description, access, and discovery in SP Data Services
- Use relevant software tools and standards for metadata creation and management (e.g. ArcGIS, SPSS, FME, ISO 19115, FGDC, DDI, Dublin Core, DataCite, MarkLogic, Microsoft Excel, Nesstar Publisher, Dataverse, etc.)
- Promote and implement metadata best practices, identifying appropriate controlled vocabularies, terms, and taxonomies for Scholars Portal Data Services
- Demonstrate an awareness and sensitivity to the values of inclusivity, diversity, and accessibility when working with and creating metadata,
- Liaise with OCUL librarians, staff, and students about data services at SP
- Assist with the development of standard workflows and infrastructure for data across data services
- Provide technical troubleshooting, email, and online support to librarians, staff, students, and end-users as required
- Lead training sessions related to metadata and other topics for OCUL staff, both in-person and online
- Develop user guides and tutorials about SP Data Services as required
- Contribute to building workflows for data preservation across SP repositories
- Collaborate with other Scholars Portal staff working with metadata to ensure consistent approaches, workflows, and integration across the department
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- An accredited degree from a Master’s level program in library and information studies
- Demonstrated commitment to the values of inclusivity, diversity, equity and accessibility
- Knowledge of key principles and concepts related to data services and relevant metadata standards (ex. ISO 19115, DDI, DataCite, Dublin Core, and research data standards)
- Proven knowledge of technical standards (XML, HTML, SQL, Basic Programming)
- Proven knowledge of metadata for data or digital objects in libraries
- Proven diplomacy and consensus building skills
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing in English
- Ability to prioritize, plan and organize work to meet deadlines successfully
- Excellent organizational, time management, collaboration, and problem-solving skills
- Proven experience in project management
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Relevant professional experience related to survey data, GIS data, or data services in libraries
- A demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in both official languages (English and French)
Salary and Terms of Appointment:
- Rank and salary will be commensurate with experience and academic/professional qualifications.
- It is anticipated that this position will be filled at the Librarian I or II level, subject to review and experience. Minimum salary: LIB I: $69,356; LIB II: $72,367 (Salary is dependent on rank at hire and qualifications). This is a contractually-limited term appointment until December 31, 2023.
