Trent University seeks an innovative and results-oriented librarian for the position of Scholarly Resources Librarian. This will be a full-time, permanent-track appointment, to commence February 1, 2022, subject to budgetary approval. The position is anticipated to be filled at Librarian II, requiring at least 3 to 5 years of relevant experience. The position is based in the Bata Library on the Peterborough Campus, and the incumbent will also be active on the Trent Durham GTA campus in Oshawa as required.

Trent University Library and Archives provides collections and services fundamental to academic success, innovation, the advancement of knowledge, and lifelong learning. With a team of 8 professional and 15 full-time support staff, the Library and Archives collaborates to achieve the goals outlined in the University’s strategic plan.
The Scholarly Resources Librarian is a member of the Library and Archives professional team, reporting to the University Librarian. Librarians are members of the Trent University Faculty Association (TUFA).
POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Scholarly Resources Librarian leads evidence-based collection development and management for the Library, ensuring the Library’s electronic and print collections meet the teaching, learning, and research needs of the Trent community. Directing responsible expenditure of the Library’s $1.8M acquisitions budget through purchasing and licensing of new materials in a variety of formats and access models, the position oversees policies and programs that ensure informed and responsive collection development supporting Trent’s academic programs and research priorities. To ensure the collection remains relevant and expands to support new programs, the Scholarly Resources Librarian oversees a program of regular assessment and evaluation of collection accuracy, currency, usage, diversity, and subject area gaps, while also directing deselection projects to remove outdated or unused materials. The Scholarly Resources Librarian represents the Library in provincial and federal consortia and contributes to fulfilling their missions through participation in consortia discussions and decisions.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Budget Management
- Manage and monitor the acquisitions budget, trust funds, and endowed funds to ensure resources are being purchased within the fiscal year.
- Provide regular budget updates to librarian colleagues.
Collection Management
- Assess collections for currency, usage, overlap, and subject area gaps and provides collections analysis information to other units as needed.
- Work closely with other librarians to support collection development through evaluating and making recommendations on resources that support teaching, learning and research needs of the Trent community.
- In collaboration with colleagues, develop collection management processes and procedures.
- Planning for allocation of physical space of collections.
- Works with the Discovery and Systems Librarian on the loading and creation of metadata records and the drafting of procedures and documentation related to records.
E-Resources Management
- Work collaboratively with the Discovery and Systems Librarian and others to manage all aspects of the electronic resources lifecycle (researching, acquiring, establishing access, administering, supporting, and evaluating) to maintain accurate information about e-resource access and holdings in Alma, Trent’s Library Systems Platform.
Licensing
- Review and negotiate e-resource and data licensing agreements with publishers/vendors/consortiums to reach pricing and licensing terms.
- Ensure licensing terms include essential clauses, including lending to other institutions and meeting Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) requirements, and any other legislative requirements.
Staff Training and Development
- Involvement with the hiring, training and assessment of staff involved in physical and e-resources management.
Communication and Consortia Representation
- Coordinate communication about appropriate conditions of use for licensed content.
- Work collaboratively with the library communication team to increase awareness of licensed resources.
- Represent Trent on the OCUL-IR and other relevant committees.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required Professional Expertise
- A graduate degree from an ALA-accredited school of library and information studies with an MLS/MI degree (or an acceptable equivalent).
- Experience negotiating license agreements in an academic library.
- Experience negotiating with publishers and vendors to obtain the best prices for an academic library.
- Demonstrated history of budget management.
- Understanding of Library Services Platforms (LSP) functionality.
- Knowledge of pricing and business models of publishers and vendors.
- Knowledge of Open Access models of publishing.
- Knowledge of scholarly communication, copyright, fair dealing, and other intellectual property issues pertaining to e-resources.
- Knowledge of collection analysis tools, methods, and standards.
Preferred Professional Expertise
- Experience working in a consortial environment.
- Experience establishing Evidence Based Acquisitions (EBA) within an academic library.
- Experience in acquisitions, serials, e-resource management and troubleshooting in an academic library LSP.
- Experience using statistical gathering tools and standards, such as COUNTER, SUSHI, Alma Analytics, and JUSP to create usage reports that help evaluate the value of library resources.
- Demonstrated awareness of emerging technologies, standards, technical and preservation issues related to the acquisition, licensing, access and usage of electronic resources.
- Familiarity with cataloguing and metadata standards and their use.
- Instructional experience.

- Oral and written fluency in English is essential.
SCHOLARLY AND PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES
Participates in library and university committees, councils, task forces, and teams as appropriate. Keeps abreast with developments in the profession and related fields that affect the practice of librarianship. Participates in professional organizations as appropriate, as well as undertakes research and engages in scholarship as appropriate.
SALARY & BENEFITS
It is anticipated that the appointment will be made at the rank of Librarian II, with an annual salary range of $89,785 to $111,354. The position includes a competitive and comprehensive benefit package.
