About the University of Toronto Libraries
The University of Toronto Libraries system is the largest academic library in Canada and is consistently ranked in the top ten among academic research libraries in North America. The system consists of 40 libraries located on three university campuses: St. George, Mississauga, and Scarborough. This array of college libraries, special collections, and specialized libraries and information centres supports the teaching and research requirements of over 300 graduate programs, more than 70 professional programs, and about 700 undergraduate degree programs. In addition to more than 12 million volumes in 341 languages, the library system currently provides access to millions of electronic resources in various forms and over 31,000 linear metres of archival material. More than150,000 new print volumes are acquired each year. The Libraries’ data centre houses more than 500 servers with a storage capacity of 1.5 petabytes.
The University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) is a growing campus on the eastern edge of Scarborough with over 13,000 full and part-time undergraduate students and a growing graduate student body. The UTSC Library is integrated into the UTL system but operates independently, developing its own services and programs. The Opportunity
The University of Toronto Scarborough Library invites applications for an innovative and highly motivated service-oriented librarian for the position of Collection Development Librarian. Reporting to the Head of Collections, the Collection Development Librarian will work collaboratively with liaison librarians and acquisition staff. The successful candidate will provide support to the Head of Collections, via the effective coordination of tasks related to unit functions. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to work on other projects as capacity and interest allows. Librarians at the UTSC Library frequently collaborate with colleagues across the tri-campus on shared committees and projects as well as to share knowledge and experiences.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Assists in the development and allocation of the collections budget.
• Maintains relationships and productive communication with vendors and publishers.
• Works with the Head of Collections to assess potential acquisitions by arranging product trials and assessing feedback from users.
• Arranges vendor-delivered professional development and training sessions for library staff, librarians, and users.
• Develops, implements, and assesses policies and procedures related to collection management.
• Explores collection development tools and vendor services that will improve or streamline processes.
• Monitors and manage the library’s overall approval plan in coordination with the Head of Collections, including serving as a resource person for liaison librarians in the review and modification of their approval profiles.
• Assists liaison librarians in setting acquisition priorities and communicating with staff to achieve short-term and long-term collections goals.
• Serves on library and university committees and working groups as necessary.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• An accredited degree from a Master’s level program in library and information studies.
• Knowledge and understanding of collection management activities such as acquisitions, cataloguing, and resource sharing within an academic environment.
• Excellent project management skills.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills; proven ability to communicate and collaborate with diverse audiences.
• Strong initiative and ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively.
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work effectively independently and collaboratively.
• Demonstrated knowledge of the principles and effective applications of equity, diversity, and inclusion.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Experience managing an acquisitions budget.
• Familiarity with best practices developing and managing special collections.
• Experience with library management systems and acquisitions platforms.
• Demonstrated ability to learn new technologies and software platforms.
• Familiarity with the liaison librarian role, including reference, instruction, and collection development.
Salary and Terms of Appointment:
Salary and rank based on experience and qualifications. The successful candidate must qualify for appointment at Librarian I or Librarian II. Minimum salary: LIB I: $69,356; LIB II: $72,367 This is a contractually limited 1-year term appointment.
