Summary
York University Libraries is seeking a two-year contractually-limited appointment (CLA) for a Scholarly Communications Librarian to advocate for, support, and educate the campus community on issues related to scholarly communication, copyright and intellectual property, research visibility, open access, open licensing, and open education. Working in coordination with colleagues in Open Scholarship and Digital Scholarship Infrastructure, the scholarly communications librarian would provide relevant instruction, outreach and support to key audiences, including councils, cohorts of graduate students, research officers, and organized research units in the area of scholarly communication. They will develop and deliver scholarship and research support services using library-supported software platforms and tools; this includes expanding services to new user groups. The incumbent would contribute to the expansion of the libraries culture of open and public scholarship and advocate for an increase in scholarly sharing and the adoption of open pedagogy. They would also lead projects related to the strategic maintenance and support for the institutional repository YorkSpace in collaboration with library staff.
Projects and Responsibilities:
Scholarly Communications
- Develop curricular and co-curricular programming in the areas of Open Access publishing, author rights, and research visibility in concert with the Research Impact Librarian, Digital Publishing Librarian, and Scholarly Publishing Librarian.
- Participate and develop programs and services for the Digital Scholarship Centre including educating and supporting members of the campus community on issues related to scholarly communication, including Open Access, open research, and open education.
Research Support
- Inform library policies by developing an understanding of existing research infrastructures, tools, and workflows used by York researchers and collaborate with Data Librarians to contribute to the holistic support for research data services with a focus on dissemination and preservation.
- Support research workflows throughout the publication process through the identification of appropriate tools (e.g., Dataverse, Open Science Framework and Figshare) and the provision support/expertise for those tools.
Promoting and Supporting Open Access
- Champion York’s Open Access policy by conducting outreach activities that promote open practices and encourage deposit of published works, in collaboration with members of the Open Scholarship and Digital Scholarship Infrastructure departments.
- In collaboration with Open Scholarship Data Librarians, provide expertise and guidance on fulfilling federal mandates for dissemination of research outputs as they relate to York’s institutional repositories.
- Advocate for and foster the use of open resources, open and affordable learning materials, and open data.
Institutional Repository
- Provide outreach, training, and support to faculty, graduate students, Organized Research Units and Canada Research Chairs on YorkSpace repository deposits.
- Support retroactive deposits of legacy theses and dissertations to YorkSpace and other systems and contribute to the ongoing maintenance of institutional repositories in collaboration with library staff.
- Collaborate with the Research Impact Librarian on the campus-level ORCiD campaign as it intersects with the institutional repository YorkSpace.
York University Libraries pursues excellence in teaching by advancing the discovery, preservation, creation and dissemination of knowledge through leadership, creativity and collaboration. All librarians and archivists advance this mission and as such will be assigned teaching responsibilities. Other duties including reference/teaching/cluster support will be assigned in light of institutional priorities or the incumbent’s disciplinary knowledge and research interests.
Qualifications:
- A Master of Library and Information Studies (MLIS) from an ALA accredited program, or equivalent degree.
- Demonstrated:
- leadership capacity and evidence of building effective working relationships with institutional and external colleagues and community stakeholders;
- teaching and presentation experience, including online contexts;
- aptitude for adapting to new responsibilities and environments, independent learning and engagement with technology/software, including excellent technical troubleshooting;
- ability to provide research and consultation services to researchers with varying levels of technical expertise;
- knowledge of current trends and issues pertaining to open access;
- knowledge of copyright, intellectual property, fair use, and open licensing in the Canadian context as it relates to scholarly communication and academic publishing;
- commitment to promoting an atmosphere of diversity, equity, and inclusion;
- Experience with:
- DSpace or other institutional repository software;
- advancing new programmatic areas and outreach programs and engaging stakeholders in these developments;
- implementing projects using project management techniques;
- setting priorities and managing multiple projects independently with competing deadlines;
- analyzing data and making local decisions based on national and local trends and to design processes that enhance services while maximizing resources;
- Knowledge of:
- metadata standards and their application;
- researcher and research object identification standards;
- open education movements;
- the scholarly publishing landscape and scholarly communications lifecycle;
- disciplinary norms and differences in scholarly publishing and knowledge mobilization;
- Evidence or promise of research contributions in the form of publications or productions, professional development and/or active involvement in professional or scholarly organizations;
- Excellent interpersonal, communication and presentation skills;
- Superior written and spoken communication in English.
About the position:
This is a two-year contractually-limited appointment at the Adjunct Librarian level starting June 1st, 2022. York offers a competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and an exceptional benefits package. All York University positions are subject to budgetary approval.
