Position Title: LIBRARIAN 1 – CHILDREN’S SERVICES 
Location: BOB PRITTIE METROTOWN LIBRARY 
Status: REGULAR FULL-TIME 

Position Summary: 

Community work with children and families through the lenses of equity, inclusion and anti-racism; design and delivery of information, reference, reader’s advisory, programming and technology assistance. Spends approximately 40% of time doing direct public service. 

This position will be responsible for community development for the southwest quadrant of Burnaby and may also be involved in some community work in the southeast quadrant.  

The Children’s Librarian at Metrotown reports to the Librarian 2. 

Duties: 

∙ Provide welcoming, inclusive service to children and caregivers in Burnaby’s culturally diverse community.  

∙ Engage with patrons and community members outside the library walls to deepen BPL’s knowledge of our community, to identify barriers to library service and to develop relevant and inclusive library services. 

∙ Participate in development and management of BPL’s Children’s collections, and help patrons to discover unique items through readers’ advisory and online and in-branch promotion. 

∙ Provide reference and information services that connect patrons with the resources and information that they need. Assist patrons with technology and digital resources. 

∙ Develop, plan and deliver children’s programming. 

∙ Attend meetings, workshops, seminars, conferences and other organized activities related to the work. 

∙ Assume responsibility for library premises when required. 

Qualifications

∙ A Master’s degree in librarianship from an ALA accredited university.  

∙ Demonstrated experience working with children in a public library setting is preferred. 

∙ Curiosity about the needs of library patrons and community members and passion for delivering excellent customer service.  

∙ Knowledge of and enthusiasm for children’s library services. 

∙ Excellent communication skills, a collaborative approach to working with colleagues and the ability to work with minimal supervision. 

∙ Sound judgement and good conflict management skills. 

∙ A commitment to apply principles of equity, diversity, inclusion and anti-racism to the work.

∙ Ability to speak languages other than English is a considerable asset. 

Salary: $34.96 to $41.78 hourly (2021 rates) 

Hours: 37.5 hours weekly. Evening and weekend work will be required. The current schedule is included below.
