Position Title: LIBRARIAN 1 – TEEN SERVICES – BASED AT BOB PRITTIE METROTOWN LIBRARY
Position Summary:
Community work with youth through the lenses of equity, inclusion and anti-racism; design and delivery of information with and for youth; reference, reader’s advisory, programming and technology assistance for teens. Spends approximately 40% of time doing direct public service at the McGill and Metrotown libraries.
The Teen Librarian reports to the Children’s and Teen Services Coordinator.
This is a temporary full time position until approximately April 2023 as a result of a maternity leave. The weekly hours are 37.5 with varying shifts including evening and weekend work. The required schedule is included at the end of this posting.
Duties:
∙ Provide welcoming, inclusive service to teens in Burnaby’s culturally diverse community.
∙ Engage with teens outside the library walls to deepen BPL’s knowledge of our teen community, to identify barriers to library service and to develop relevant and inclusive library services.
∙ Use knowledge of teen collections and resources to provide readers’ advisory and information assistance. ∙ Develop, plan and implement services and programs for teens in all library branches and in the community.
∙ Identify, establish, develop and maintain connections with schools, community services and organizations that serve teens in Burnaby.
∙ Work with library staff in all branches to increase knowledge of teen services.
∙ Applicants must be prepared to work at any location in the system.
∙ Assume responsibility for library premises when required.
Qualifications:
∙ A Master’s degree in librarianship from an ALA accredited university.
∙ Demonstrated experience working with teens and/or older children in a public library setting is preferred.
∙ Curiosity about the needs of teens and the ability to create and maintain relationships with them.
∙ Excellent communication skills, a collaborative approach to working with colleagues and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
∙ Sound judgement and good conflict management skills.
∙ A commitment to apply principles of equity, diversity, inclusion and anti-racism to the work.
∙ Ability to speak languages other than English is a considerable asset.
Salary: $34.96 to $41.78 hourly (2021 rates). Burnaby Public Library offers a comprehensive benefit package.
