The John W. Graham Library embodies nearly two centuries of vision, energy, and commitment to the academic enterprise of Trinity College. The Library serves Trinity’s undergraduate Arts and Science students, the graduate Divinity students and faculty of Trinity and Wycliffe Colleges, Trinity and Wycliffe alumni, and the greater University of Toronto and Anglican Church communities who seek our resources. 

Trinity College is a vibrant and diverse academic community with a rich history and excellent local and international reputation. Since its founding in 1851, the College has valued and fostered a high level of academic achievement with some 2,000 currently registered students, 450 of whom live at the College. Trinity College grounds comprise spectacular historic buildings, and the College is among the smallest and most prestigious colleges on the St. George Campus of the University of Toronto. Trinity’s campus currently consists of four main buildings and is located in the central Toronto downtown core, steps from the Bloor-St. George subway and Queen’s Park. 

Position Summary: 

The Nicholls Librarian & Director of the John W. Graham Library provides leadership in all aspects of Library and Archives operations, policy development and planning. The Librarian oversees the public and technical service operations of the Library and assists in the provision of reference and instructional services and cataloguing, locally and with external agencies as required. In addition, the College Librarian manages the Library with respect for the terms of the Memorandum of Agreement with Wycliffe College for the provision of theological library resources. The College Librarian develops and manages the book, periodical, electronic and audio-visual, and special collection of the Library and handles gifts to the Library, including interaction with donors, cultural property applications and acquisition decisions. 

Key responsibilities (but not limited to): 

• Provides leadership in all aspects of Library and Archives operations, policy development, and planning. 

• Oversees the public and technical service operations of the Library and assists in the provision of reference and instructional services and in resolving cataloguing problems, locally and with external agencies, as needed. 

• Manages the Library with respect for the terms of the Memorandum of Agreement with Wycliffe College for the provision of theological library resources. 

• Prepares and manages the budget of the Library and is responsible for all expenditures from Library accounts, current, operating, and trust. 

• Fosters and informs the provision of instructional services to support the College’s academic programming and collaborates with the College’s programs to with regard to information 

literacy goals including the identification, location, and ethical use of information resources for research and study. 

• Works collaboratively with other College academic services to provide integrated academic support for students. Ensures that students receive effective orientation to the library and ongoing support, particularly in research skill development. 

• Maintains service to assist faculty in providing course materials in digital, print and other formats, in accord with copyright legislation, and ensure copyright compliance in all library activities. 

• Develops and manages the book, periodical, electronic, audio-visual, and special collections of the Library, including selection of materials in all relevant undergraduate disciplines and in theology, as well as weeding and conservation. 

• Consults faculty in matters of collection management in their disciplines. Directs the Graham Library’s participation in the collaborative initiatives of the Toronto School of Theology libraries.

• Handles gifts to the Library, from interaction with donors and acquisition decisions, to securing appraisals for income tax receipts, preparing documentation for Cultural Properties applications, and providing other appropriate acknowledgement. Financial gifts, endowments major gifts (financial and gifts in kind) or bequests will be coordinated with the Office of Development and Alumni Affairs. 

• Supports relevant committees including Senate Committees and the Joint Advisory Committee on Theological Library Services for Wycliffe and Trinity Colleges. 

• Reports annually to the Provost on the state of the Library and is accountable to the Principal of Wycliffe College for their contracted services. 

• Reports statistical data annually to the University of Toronto Library (for North American academic library data collection through the Association of Research Libraries), the Association of Theological Schools, and the American Theological Library Association, and occasionally to other bodies as requested. 

• Within Trinity College, represents the Library on the Senate, the Faculty of Divinity Council, the Senate Arts and Science Committee, and the Provost’s Administrative Committee, and on ad hoc committees or other standing College committees on request. 

• Represents Trinity in groups promoting and facilitating cooperation among University of Toronto campus libraries, including the Directors’ Forum, the Collection Management and Development Committee, the Toronto School of Theology Library Committee, and other bodies from time to time as required (e.g., the Working Group on Library Assessment). 

• Helps to support the Friends of the Library, serves on the Friends’ Executive, and works with them on a variety of projects. 

• Reports on Library needs and developments to the Executive of the Friends and proposes projects appropriate for their support. 

• Promotes and interprets the Library and its collections within the College and beyond, as appropriate. 

• Gives tours and prepares exhibitions for College and other events, to showcase the special resources of the Library. 

• Is responsible for the effective planning, implementation, and utilization of evolving information technologies in the Library, and participates when appropriate in planning the development of general College technological development (e.g., the website).

• Attempts to ensure the maintenance and improvement of physical facilities to promote and foster both the effective use and the continuing security of Library resources. 

• Works collaboratively with other College academic services to broaden the use of library spaces.

• At the request of the Provost and other colleagues, assists in other College projects and activities as needed. 

Experience: 

• A degree from an accredited Masters level program in library and information studies.

• Relevant research experience, publication, teaching or demonstrated record of scholarly activity. 

• An advanced subject degree in a relevant subject area. 

• Significant experience in relevant professional associations. 

• Relevant management experience. 

• Demonstrated leadership abilities, particularly in team building, with proven experience creating a common vision and fostering a positive work environment. 

• Outstanding interpersonal, intercultural, and communication skills. 

• Demonstrated deep understanding of research, teaching, learning and collections, particularly in the areas of the college’s academic programs. 

• Record of effective collaboration involving diverse faculty, library staff, students and other College stakeholders. 

• Demonstrated planning, decision making and problem-solving skills. 

• Demonstrated commitment to the values of equity, inclusivity, diversity, and Accessibility; proven ability to promote respect and inclusion by working successfully with a wide variety of people and encouraging their participation and involvement. 

• Demonstrated commitment to mentorship and staff development and growth. Capacity to thrive in an environment of change, and to nurture that capacity in others. 

• Demonstrated commitment to ongoing learning and professional growth. 

• Strong evidence of a growth mindset: a librarian who demonstrates flexibility, creativity and resilience. 

• Outstanding oral and written communication skills.
