Job Description:

McMaster University Library is seeking an innovative, forward-looking and collaborative leader to assume the newly created position of Associate University Librarian, Teaching & Learning (AUL T&L). This is a full-time, continuing appointment, reporting to the University Librarian.  

The AUL T&L will provide the inspirational leadership and strategic oversight to deliver robust and user-focused library learning programs to McMaster students and faculty. The successful candidate will be a librarian of exceptional skill and vision. They will have a keen understanding of the evolving role of the research library in higher education, a strong background in pedagogical theory and best practices and the interpersonal skills required to convey a compelling and strategic vision to others. They will foster deep and ongoing collaborations between librarians, faculty, students and community groups actively engaged in teaching and learning. They will manage and nurture a healthy and collegial organizational culture reflecting the University Library’s ongoing commitment to diversity, equity, accessibility and inclusion. 

The successful candidate will:

  • Provide visionary leadership in planning, implementing and evaluating new models for library teaching and learning at McMaster based on best pedagogical theory and practice.  
  • Lead the strategic development and curriculum integration of the University Library’s face-to-face, blended and online information literacy offerings based on evidence and best practices across higher education. 
  • Demonstrate, in all actions and decisions, a strong and unwavering commitment to diversity, equity, decolonization, accessibility and inclusion for staff and library users.
  • Ensure the dignity and independence of all McMaster learners by advancing the development and delivery of equitable learning resources and spaces based on Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles. 
  • Directly and indirectly supervise, coach and seek out professional and career development opportunities for division staff. Advocate for creative approaches to mentoring and empowering employees to achieve their personal and career potential.
  • Develop policies and programs that enable an exceptional and coherent learner experience, while recognizing the diverse needs of multiple constituencies.
  • Enhance existing and build new opportunities for external partnerships with institutions and organizations to leverage expertise and develop programs at scale in an increasingly complex digital world.
  • Support partnerships with other library units to create and promote the use of learning objects and modules based on digitized content from McMaster’s own distinct collections.
  • Take a leadership role in building new and enhanced relationships with key university and external partners around teaching and learning (individual university faculty, MacPherson Institute (McMaster’s teaching centre), Health Sciences Library, Continuing Education, Student Success Centre, Student Accessibility Services, the School of Graduate Studies, community partners, etc.).
  • Support the University Library’s commitment to community engagement with a focus on enhancing digital and information literacy.
  • Build a strong community of practice to support teaching and learning activities across the University Library.
  • Champion new and emerging digital pedagogical practices and tools to support the library instruction program as well as general campus learning.
  • Provide high-level oversight for the learning services provided by library and external partners in the Mills Learning Commons (Writing Centre, accessibility services, support for international students, etc.).
  • Champion the development of the University’s new First Year Experience program.
  • Provide high-level advocacy, promotion and support for the creation, adoption and use of open educational resources with senior leaders across campus.
  • Advise library staff on the Library’s involvement in public copyright issues.
  • In collaboration with the Director of Assessment, build and maintain a robust set of appropriate metrics to illustrate the value of the Library’s teaching and learning programs.
  • Represent McMaster University Library, on campus and externally, in relevant consortial venues, developing collective strategies for multi-institutional programs that operate at scale in an increasingly digital and complex learning environment.
  • Participate in the general management of McMaster’s University Library through membership in the Library Leadership Group (the senior administrative team).  Serve as acting University Librarian on occasion.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A Master’s degree in library and information science or equivalent from an accredited library and information science program. 
  • Minimum of seven years as a professional librarian with at least five years of progressive leadership experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience using pedagogical standards and best practices for the creation and delivery of teaching and learning programs within research libraries. 
  • A proven record of active engagement in activities that support diversity, equity, decolonization, accessibility and inclusion for staff and library users.
  • Proven human resources skills, including supervising, developing and mentoring staff.
  • Strong knowledge of emerging trends and issues in academic libraries and higher education, including services, collections, technologies and spaces.
  • Proven ability to promote cooperative efforts and to foster productive collaborations.
  • Demonstrated ability to promote a positive and healthy organizational culture, including the ability to inspire colleagues to achieve their potential.
  • Foundational knowledge of educational and learning technologies.
  • Knowledge of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles.
  • Evidence of excellent analytical and critical thinking, organizational and decision making skills. 
  • Superior communication and interpersonal skills. 
  • A strong and ongoing record of professional contributions and leadership in the library and information science community. This record will include both scholarly activity (research, publications and presentations) and service to professional associations and organizations (at the provincial, national and or international level).  

ADDITIONAL ASSETS:

Preference will be given to those candidates with significant experience working in a research university or other large academic institution. Preference will also be given to those with: 

  • expertise working in a unionized environment
  • experience writing and managing grants
  • fundraising experience
  • Knowledge of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act and its implications for research libraries.
  • Demonstrated experience working with educational and learning technologies.
  • Basic understanding of Canadian copyright law and its impact on research libraries.
  • Knowledge of key tools and techniques for measuring the impact of library teaching and learning activities.

VACCINATION POLICY STATEMENT

The University is committed to providing and maintaining healthy and safe working and learning environments for all workers, students, volunteers and visitors. Effective October 18, 2021, all McMaster community members, including employees, accessing a McMaster campus or facility in person are required to be fully vaccinated or to have received an exemption from the University for a valid human rights ground. This is a term and condition of employment. As defined by the provincial government, people are considered fully vaccinated two weeks after their second dose in a 2-dose series.
