Applications are now being received for the above position in the Community Engagement Department with Markham Public Library. The position is currently located at the Administration Centre.

VISION FOR THE POSITION

The Outreach Coordinator contributes to the Community Development work of the Library by connecting with the Markham community through a variety of programming and outreach opportunities. He/she represents the Library in the community to increase the profile and use of the Library, its programs and services.  He/she develops opportunities to support community engagement through volunteerism.  He/she facilities, off-site, virtual and in-library programming, and supports the development of community events and other Library services. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

Programming

  1. Works with the Community Engagement team to identify opportunities to partner with community organizations and groups to provide engaging library events, programs, and services. 
  1. Seeks opportunities to develop programs and services that actively support the inclusion of Markham’s diverse communities. 
  1. Supports youth literacy by overseeing the volunteer-run reading programs. Seeks opportunities to develop other services that support literacy development.
  2. Coordinates the annual Battle of the Books program working with community partners, developing content and facilitating the program.
  3. Assists with the development of community events in the library. 

Outreach

  1. Implements the outreach strategy, develops outreach schedules, and coordinates with colleagues to ensure all outreach activities are appropriately staffed.  
  1. Provides outreach services to schools and other organizations that serve Markham.  Provides off-site instruction and other learning opportunities that support the Library’s digital literacy initiatives. 
  1. Assists with external promotions of library services. Regularly attends community events and fairs.
  1. Supports the Library’s early literacy initiatives with presentations to the community such as early literacy presentations for newcomers or Building Blocks for Kindergarten.

Volunteer Management

  1. Administers the MPL volunteer management system and promotes volunteer opportunities to provide meaningful and engaging community service experiences.
  2. Trains and coaches branch staff in the use of the volunteer management system.  Provides training and orientation to summer camp and reading program volunteers.

General Responsibilities

  1. Responds to customer issues and inquiries. Provides excellent customer service according to MPL’s Customer Service Standards.
  2. Performs other duties as assigned. 

QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Bachelor degree from a recognized Canadian university or the equivalent and a minimum of 1 year customer service experience.
  2. Experience in community development work required.
  3. Experience providing instruction or facilitating programming.
  4. Experience developing and facilitating programming is required. Prior experience working with at-risk populations is preferred. 
  5. Available to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends as required at multiple locations. 
  1. A valid driver’s licence and access to a vehicle. 
  1. As a condition of employment, the successful candidate will be required to provide a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Screening check.


DEMONSTRATED SKILLS

  1. Demonstrated exceptional customer service skills. 
  2. Highly developed interpersonal skills including the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships staff and other community stakeholders.
  3. Demonstrated organizational ability, including the ability to successfully manage tight timelines, including exacting schedules and deadlines.  
  1. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

WORKPLACE HEALTH AND SAFETY

Supervisory personnel shall:

  • Familiarize themselves with the health and safety program, applicable health and safety legislation and ensure effective application and compliance within their jurisdiction.
  • Ensure employees receive adequate training to protect their health and safety.
  • Be knowledgeable of hazards or potential hazards in workplaces under their control.
  • Ensure hazards, which put employees in imminent danger, are addressed promptly.
  • Ensure all accidents and incidents are investigated promptly and all reports are completed.
  • And take corrective action.

Please note that Markham Public Library is open 7 days per week, and regular weekend work is required. Work location is subject to change.
