Position Title: DIGITAL STUDIO COORDINATOR 

Position Summary: 

Under the general supervision of the Bob Prittie Metrotown Branch Manager, the Digital Studio Coordinator is responsible for coordinating services related to digital literacy, with a focus on the use of creative and innovative technology in the library. This position will direct the day-to-day operations of BPL’s new specialized technology spaces, beginning with the Digital Studio scheduled to open at the Metrotown Library in 2022. Launching the Metrotown Digital Studio and its services will be the primary focus for the Digital Studio Coordinator in their first year. 

This new position at BPL will help build people’s digital literacy through group programming, individual training, and technical assistance in the digital studio, to support: 

∙ technical skill development, 

∙ critical thinking about technology in society, 

∙ creative and innovative uses of technology, and 

∙ participation in a digitally inclusive environment. 

The Digital Studio Coordinator will work both inside and outside the library to understand community needs, and will work with library staff to deliver services to people of all ages and backgrounds, including children and teens, newcomers, seniors and job seekers. 

This is a dynamic role where an enthusiasm for digital technology, a love of teaching and learning, creativity and community-centered thinking are required. The successful candidate will be self-motivated, have a natural curiosity about technology, and seek out innovative and creative opportunities to serve the technological and digital needs of our communities. 

This is a regular full time position. The weekly hours are 37.5 with varying shifts and will include working some evenings and weekends. 

Duties: 

∙ Directs the day-to-day operations of BPL’s specialized technology spaces, including working in conjunction with public service staff in the design, development, delivery and evaluation of technology-focused services and programs. 

∙ Plans, assigns, and evaluates the work of staff in BPL’s technology spaces. Provides training and support to staff working in these spaces. 

∙ Proactively develops and maintains relationships with Burnaby community groups and organizations to inform services and programs related to the library’s specialized technology tools and spaces.  

∙ Supports Burnaby Public Library’s operational and strategic priorities, and is an active member of the leadership team.  

∙ Keeps up-to-date on emerging technology trends and community needs and assists in selection of new technology for public programs and services as well as the design of future technology spaces at BPL.

∙ Participates in public services by providing reference, readers’ advisory, technical assistance, and customer service. 

Qualifications: 

∙ A post-secondary degree in librarianship and/or a combination of education and experience in a related field (e.g. teaching, fine arts, community development, or digital technologies). 

∙ Demonstrated experience with technology as well as an ongoing curiosity to learn and apply skills to new and emerging technologies.  

∙ Experience in training and supporting learners on new technologies both individually and in group settings. 

∙ Able to identify community needs and to design, deliver and evaluate services, programs, and community initiatives that respond to those needs. 

∙ Able to work effectively with a wide range of community members as well as internal and external partners.

∙ Excellent communication and relationship building skills. 

∙ Able to work well both in team settings and independently with minimal supervision. 

∙ Experience in or an aptitude for supervision and leadership, including communication and conflict management, coaching, problem-solving, planning and coordination. 

∙ Experience with maker and creative spaces and/or equipment related to media creation (e.g. audio or video recording, electronics, fabrication). 

∙ A commitment to apply principles of equity, diversity, inclusion and anti-racism to your work. 

∙ An ability to speak languages in addition to English is valuable to us.  

Salary: $39.50 to $47.34 hourly (2021 rates). Burnaby Public Library offers a comprehensive benefit package.
