Position Status: Regular Full-Time
Position Type: Librarian
Workload Amount: 8
Department: Library
Location: North Vancouver

Nature and Scope of Work

Located on the territories of the Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), SəỈílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh), xʷməθkʷəỷəm (Musqueam), shíshálh (Sechelt), and LíỈwat Nations, Capilano University is a teaching-focused university based in North Vancouver. We value curiosity and imagination; a commitment to Truth and Reconciliation, Indigenization, and decolonization; collaboration, authenticity, and belonging; health and well-being; transparency and honesty; and taking sustainable actions to enable a better place for our future descendants.

The Capilano University Library is looking for an experienced and collaborative Metadata Strategies Librarian to guide the planning, coordination, and assessment of metadata work in our library. We are looking for someone who brings vision and expertise around cataloguing practice, the enhancement and remediation of metadata to improve discovery for Library users, inclusivity and the decolonization of metadata, and project management. The person in this role collaborates closely with the Technical Services Supervisor to coordinate and assess metadata creation and quality at the strategic level, advise Library Technicians on metadata and cataloguing standards, and coordinate the development and implementation of projects, technologies, procedures, training and workflows.

The Metadata Strategies Librarian also works in close partnership with the Digital Services Librarian and the Library Systems Analyst to coordinate the configuration, maintenance, integration, and enhancement of library systems, including the ILS, ILL systems, potential library services platforms, and other technologies. The position requires a deep understanding of how cataloguing and systems work intersect, an analytical and “systems thinking” mindset, flexibility, and openness to change. This team will collectively determine how to share this work based on the skills and interests of the successful candidate.

Librarians at Capilano University are also educators, leveraging their expertise to help students and faculty become more skilled at library research. The person in this role acts as the liaison for the School of STEM (Biology, Chemistry, Computing & Data Science, Engineering, Mathematics & Statistics, and Physics & Astronomy). This includes teaching, collection development, student research support, and relationship development and consultation with faculty across these programs. STEM is a growing area that may present new opportunities for Library support and collaboration. All members of the librarian team also share Research Help Desk, AskAway, and other teaching duties, and the Metadata Strategies Librarian can expect to teach a number of research skills workshops for English 100 each semester in an active learning environment. We welcome librarians without teaching or STEM experience to apply, as support and mentoring around teaching and liaison work is available from the librarian team.

Our Working Environment

The new librarian will join a team of seven other faculty librarians who work within a collegial management model. All members of the team participate in collective decision-making related to work within the department, attend department meetings, and participate in peer evaluation, search-hire committees, and other working groups in the Library and across campus. Within this model, librarians share leadership and administrative duties in the elected roles of Faculty Coordinator and Steward. Librarians also collaborate with the University Librarian, the Technical Services and Library Services Supervisors, the Library Systems Analyst, other Library staff, and partners across campus.

This is a full-time ongoing position with a two-year probationary period. Benefits include extended health with a flexible spending account, as well as 42 vacation days and 42 professional development (PD) days per year. We have a working schedule of Monday to Friday with flexible start and end times. Our work is conducted primarily on campus, with some flexibility to split work between the office and off-campus locations.

There is a Children’s Centre on site that offers waitlist priority to Capilano University students and employees. The University also offers modest competitive funding opportunities for PD and research. The University does not offer relocation assistance at this time.
