Early Career Resident, Liaison – University of Toronto

POSITION: Early Career Resident, Liaison (Librarian I; contractually limited term appointment)
Open only to Black and/ or Indigenous recent graduates (graduated no earlier than Spring 2021) DEPARTMENT: Scholarly Communications & Copyright Office

DATE REQUIRED: As Soon as Possible

Librarianship is a predominately white profession. We know that intentional work is needed to diversify it and so the University of Toronto Libraries is dedicated to developing a cohesive approach and plan to do this. To date, we have piloted a series of programs at a variety of career stages, including opportunities for high school students and internships for Faculty of Information MI students; we anticipate that these initiatives will continue. The development of two early-career librarian opportunities is our next step forward.

University of Toronto equity/demographic data has shown us that we particularly lack representation from Black and/or Indigenous colleagues. These positions are therefore open only to Black and/ or Indigenous recent graduates (graduated no earlier than Spring 2021) in an intentional effort to diversify our librarian complement. These positions will provide exposure to a wide range set of opportunities, as well as targeted mentoring and coaching.

The Opportunity

The Resident for Liaison work will have the opportunity to work closely with the Scholarly Communications and Copyright Office (SCCO). Reporting to the Head, SCCO, they will gain exposure to three different units: the Engineering & Computer Science Library (ECSL), the SCCO, and the Collection Development Department (CDD). They will have the opportunity to learn about new publishing models, consortial licensing negotiations, and the limits copyright places on access while supporting the development of a coordinated approach to OA at UTL and assist in improving library wide understanding of the rapidly changing scholarly communications landscape. They will also explore a variety of responsibilities that are typically found in a liaison portfolio. The successful candidate will be given a subject area for teaching and explore collection development with an EDI lens. They will develop their teaching and reference skills, work closely with faculty, students and other librarians and contribute to EDI collections projects currently led by the Collections Coordinators. The knowledge and experience gained will prepare the Resident for multiple possible librarian roles including any role that touches on services and support for faculty and researchers as well as any collections or scholarly communications related or adjacent role.
