About the University of Toronto Libraries  

The University of Toronto Libraries system is the largest academic library in Canada and is consistently ranked in the top ten among academic research libraries in North America. The system consists of 40 libraries located on three university campuses: St. George, Mississauga, and Scarborough. This array of college libraries, special collections, and specialized libraries and information centres supports the teaching and research requirements of over 300 graduate programs, more than 70 professional programs, and about 700 undergraduate degree programs. In addition to more than 12 million volumes in 341 languages, the library system currently provides access to millions of electronic resources in various forms and over 31,000 linear metres of archival material. More than 150,000 new print volumes are acquired each year. The Libraries’ data centre houses more than 500 servers with a storage capacity of 1.5 petabytes. 

About the Centre for Criminology and Sociolegal Studies (CrimSL): 

The CrimSL’s mandate is to support the research and information needs of the department’s faculty, graduates, and undergraduates, as well as the broader U of T community and members of the public. 

The collection reflects the unit’s multidisciplinary orientation, with a focus on criminology, criminal justice, deviant behaviour, corrections and penology, policing and law enforcement, and growing representation from the field of sociolegal studies. 

The Opportunity 

The CrimSL Librarian will work collaboratively with leadership, faculty and staff on the following responsibilities: 

• As a solo librarian, manages all operations of the CrimSL library including public service, research and teaching support, website creation and maintenance, and the physical space

• Outreach and proactively engages with faculty, staff, and students to enhance the knowledge of and access to library resources and services 

• Working in collaboration with faculty, develops curriculum-embedded library instruction sessions, both synchronously and asynchronously 

• Assumes oversight and development of the library’s newsletter, Crimbrary

• In collaboration with colleagues at CrimSL, manages large-scale organization of materials for the anticipated relocation to new CrimSL space 

• Initiates and oversees preservation and digitization projects in consultation with colleagues across UTL. Digitalization of materials may include, for example, grey literature, Statistics Canada and government publications 

• Manages the CrimSL’s syllabus service for the Centre’s courses 

• Proactively builds collections in the area of Criminology and related fields

• Catalogues materials using UTL’s new Library Services Platform  

• Trains faculty, students and library staff on new UT Library system and catalogue interface

• Provide in-depth research support to faculty and students 

• Actively participates in relevant library or campus-wide committees or working groups 

• Supervises work study students and library support staff 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

• A degree from an accredited Master’s level program in library and information studies

• Demonstrated commitment to the values of inclusivity, diversity, equity, anti-racism and accessibility 

• Familiarity with in-person and online reference service models 

• Familiar with approaches to library instruction, both in-person and online

• Familiar with collection building approaches and platforms 

• Ability to work under pressure in a rapidly changing environment 

• Ability to work effectively in both a team-based and self-directed environment

• Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and written/verbal communication skills

• Comfort with ambiguity 

• Facility in promotion and communication via social media platforms  

• Flexible, with a creative, user-centered approach to service 

• Demonstrated commitment to innovation and continuous learning 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

• Education in Criminology and Sociolegal Studies or related disciplines 

• Relevant professional experience 

Salary and Terms of Appointment:  

It is anticipated that this position will be filled at the Librarian I or II level, subject to review and experience. Minimum salary: LIB I: $70,744; LIB II: $73,815 (Salary is dependent on rank at hire and qualifications). This is a 2-year contractually-limited term appointment.
