The University of Toronto Libraries system is the largest academic library in Canada and is consistently ranked in the top ten among academic research libraries in North America. The system consists of 40 libraries located on three university campuses: St. George, Mississauga, and Scarborough. This array of college libraries, special collections, and specialized libraries and information centres supports the teaching and research requirements of over 300 graduate programs, more than 70 professional programs, and about 700 undergraduate degree programs. In addition to more than 12 million volumes in 341 languages, the library system currently provides access to millions of electronic resources in various forms and over 31,000 linear metres of archival material. About Scholars Portal
Scholars Portal, a department within the University of Toronto Library, is the digital service arm of the Ontario Council of University Libraries (OCUL), managing infrastructure and services that support Ontario’s 21 university libraries. The Scholars Portal team of librarians, developers, and systems staff support services in four broad areas: research & member services; data and geospatial services; digital collections; and digital preservation services.
The Opportunity
The University of Toronto Library invites applications for a Digital Projects Librarian, Scholars Portal. Scholars Portal is the digital service arm of the Ontario Council of University Libraries (OCUL), which manages infrastructure and services that support Ontario’s 21 university libraries. The Scholars Portal team, based at the University of Toronto, is made up of 29 librarians, developers, and systems staff members who support services in four broad areas: research and member services; data and geospatial services; digital collections; and digital preservation services. Reporting to the Web and Discovery Services Librarian and working with project teams composed of developers and librarians, the Digital Projects Librarian will contribute to several website migration projects and assist with support, auditing, and maintenance for Scholars Portal static websites, web forms, and analytics.
Responsibilities:
With a project team including staff from the University of Toronto Libraries ITS department and the OCUL office:
• Lead an investigation into feasible options for wiki or Intranet software that will replace the current SPOTDocs Confluence platform
• Consult widely within the Scholars Portal team and OCUL stakeholder community to determine required functionality and content for a new platform
• Audit and assess existing content and resources.
• Develop and implement a migration plan to a new platform.
• Support the Web and Discovery Services Librarian with a variety of Drupal-based projects for OCUL and Scholars Portal, including an upgrade of the current OCUL website.
• Support Scholars Portal and OCUL library staff in creating and maintaining learning resources.
• Support Scholars Portal team members by maintaining and accessing web analytics tools, mainly Matomo.
• Other duties as assigned
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• A degree from an accredited Master’s level program in library and information studies
• Demonstrated commitment to the values of inclusivity, diversity, equity, anti-racism and accessibility
• Knowledge of web development standards and accessibility issues
• Understanding of information architecture and content strategy
• Excellent oral and written communication, interpersonal, problem-solving, presentation and teamwork skills
• Strong organizational and time management skills, with an aptitude in learning new technical skills
• Demonstrated ability to work in a highly collaborative environment and across multiple departments
• Awareness of trends and issues related to scholarly communications, open access, and open source development
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
The ideal candidate will also have experience with some of the following:
• Defining and communicating development requirements
• Web analytics software
• Project management or team leadership
• Working with IT or digital projects in an academic library
• Using Linux and using a command line interface
• Installing, maintaining and troubleshooting open-source technology, Git and Github • User experience design
Salary and Terms of Appointment:
It is anticipated that this position will be filled at the Librarian I or II level, subject to review and experience. Minimum salary: LIB I: $70,744; LIB II: $73,815 (Salary is dependent on rank at hire and qualifications). This is a contractually-limited term appointment until July 31, 2023 parental leave replacement.
