Library Technician, Public Services & Community Engagement
Appointment Type: Permanent, 35 hours per week
Compensation: Hiring Range: $48,795.00 to $57,437.00. Competitive benefits package, including group benefits, defined benefit pension plan, tuition waiver, generous vacation time, etc.

Position Summary:

The John W. Graham Library seeks a user-focused, enthusiastic, and creative library technician to join a small team of collaborative staff. The successful candidate will serve Trinity and Wycliffe College’s diverse community of users, along with the broader University of Toronto constituency. In partnership with other library staff, the Library Technician, Public Services & Community Engagement will contribute significantly to the library’s outreach initiatives and a positive user experience. 

The John W. Graham Library embodies nearly two centuries of vision, energy, and commitment to the academic enterprise of Trinity College. The Library serves Trinity’s undergraduate Arts and Science students, the Basic Degree and Graduate Divinity students of Trinity and Wycliffe Colleges, Trinity and Wycliffe alumni, and the greater University of Toronto and Anglican Church communities who seek our resources.

Trinity College is a vibrant and diverse academic community with a rich history and excellent local and international reputation. Since its founding in 1851, the College has valued and fostered a high level of academic achievement with some 2,000 currently registered students, 450 of whom live at the College. The Trinity College grounds comprise spectacular historic buildings, and the College is among the most prestigious colleges on the St. George Campus of the University of Toronto. Trinity’s campus currently consists of four main buildings and is located in the central Toronto downtown core, steps from the Bloor-St. George subway and Queen’s Park.

Key responsibilities (but not limited to):

  • Provides excellent customer service to a diverse population of library users, including when student assistants are unavailable or demand warrants.
  • Assists library users in locating and borrowing library materials and accessing library services and equipment; makes referrals to other library staff and College/university offices, where appropriate.
  • Supervises student assistants and deals with non-routine user matters (e.g., contested fines or borrowing privileges) in the absence of the Circulation Supervisor.
  • Acts as the main editor for Graham Library’s website and represents the Library on the College’s Web Committee, under the guidance of the Director.
  • Solicits user feedback on the library’s collections, services, and spaces.
  • Recommends leisure materials for purchase and assists with the promotion, curation, assessment, and maintenance of popular reading materials.
  • Assists instructional librarians with extra-curricular or drop-in workshops, particularly in the marketing and promotion of these events.
  • Curates regular displays of library materials, including rare and special collections, in collaboration with the Cataloguing Technician and other library staff.
  • Contributes ideas and content for the Library’s monthly newsletter.
  • Collaborates with instructional librarians and the Director on user surveys and other assessments of library user experience.
  • Other related duties as assigned. 

Qualifications:

  • A Library Technician’s Diploma (required).
  • A university degree (preferred in a subject area that the College supports – e.g., theology, international relations or one of its cognate disciplines) (asset).
  • Experience in an academic library, preferably in user services and/or community engagement.
  • Experience in web editing (asset).
  • Experience in library outreach (asset).
  • Experience in service assessment (asset).

Working Hours:

Full-time, 35 hours per week. Working hours will normally be either 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. or 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Monday to Friday, dependent on operational needs; however, flexibility in hours is required due to the nature of working with students, and occasional evening or weekend work may be required to accommodate the student schedule. Overtime may be required during peak periods.
