York University Libraries seeks a dynamic and innovative individual with strong teaching experience to advance critical information and digital literacies at York University within the Division of Teaching & Learning.

This person will support the teaching, learning and research needs of all our users within either Humanities & Fine Arts or Social Sciences & Environmental Studies Cluster. This continuing appointment position is open to those with any mix of direct experience or expertise with experiential education, experiential learning, user experience, and teaching. This continuing appointment position is open to those with an understanding of information literacy frameworks in higher education, such as ACRL’s Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education.

Reporting to the Director of Student Learning & Academic Success (SLAS), the candidate will work in a collaborative team environment to advance a cohesive and coordinated approach to developing students’ information and other academic literacies through programs and initiatives to create critical thinkers and life-long learners.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • advancing experiential education within a framework of critical information and digital literacies at York University;
  • incorporating experiential education and experiential learning into library teaching initiatives;
  • leading, developing, and collaborating with partners on experiential education initiatives;
  • strengthening YUL’s commitment to universal design for learning;
  • teaching classes and providing consultations in assigned disciplines / subjects;
  • developing curriculum integration plans in collaboration with partners; and
  • establishing reciprocal partnerships with faculty and community organizations to develop experiential learning opportunities.

Other duties include:

  • collaborating with colleagues across the Libraries to support key priorities;
  • contributing to scholarly and professional knowledge by carrying out research, preparing presentations, publications, or other creative works, and participating in professional and scholarly associations;
  • actively participating in decision-making activities undertaken within the Libraries and the University through collegial contributions to committees and other groups; and
  • fulfilling other duties and disciplinary responsibilities may be assigned in light of institutional priorities or the incumbent’s disciplinary knowledge and research interests.

The successful candidate will keep abreast of relevant emerging areas of interest and innovation on campus and in the field of experiential education. They will engage in ongoing self-directed learning and professional development to bring new technologies and methodologies into York’s teaching and research environment. The successful candidate will also represent the Libraries on teaching and learning organizations and initiatives, and will advance the profession through research, publication and participation in professional organizations.

Qualifications

The candidate must have:

  • a Master of Library and Information Studies (MLIS) from an ALA-accredited program or its recognized equivalent;
  • experience teaching and an understanding of sound pedagogical praxis;
  • experience collaborating on or developing student-centred programs, or experiential education or experiential learning initiatives;
  • good interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills;
  • effective written and spoken communication in English; and
  • experience successfully managing multiple projects and meeting deadlines

The candidate must demonstrate:

  • the ability to advance and manage new programmatic areas and outreach programs while engaging stakeholders in these developments;
  • the ability to teach and present effectively in person and online;
  • leadership capacity and evidence of building effective working relationships;
  • the ability to adapt to new responsibilities and environments, undertake independent learning and engage with technology and software; and
  • evidence or promise of research contributions in the form of publications, exhibits or other creative works; professional development; and engagement with professional or scholarly organizations. 

About the position:

This is a continuing appointment at the Assistant Librarian level starting May 1, 2023. York offers a competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and an exceptional benefits package. All York University positions are subject to budgetary approval.
