The University of Toronto Libraries system is the largest academic library in Canada and is consistently ranked in the top ten among academic research libraries in North America. This array of college libraries, special collections, and specialized libraries and information centres supports the teaching and research requirements of over 300 graduate programs, more than 70 professional programs, and about 700 undergraduate degree programs. It includes a Learning Commons, two smart classrooms, an audio-video recording studio, Li Koon Chun Finance Learning Centre, and a dedicated space for archives and special collections.
The Opportunity
The Head, Instruction Services will work closely with colleagues within the Library and across the UTM campus to develop an overall vision for the UTM Library Instruction Program. The incumbent will develop this Program to support and align with the UTM Campus Strategic Framework and the teaching and learning mission of the UTM Campus.
Reporting to the UTML Associate Librarian, Library & Learning Services, the Head, Instruction Services, is a member of the UTM Library’s senior leadership team and leads the Library’s information literacy instruction program development, including:
- Strategic planning and development of curriculum-based instruction, including curriculum mapping, implementation, promotion, and assessment of programs
- Development of orientation, transition, and co-curricular programming for the Library and with campus partners
- Coordinating planning and development of instruction tools
The Head, Instruction Services will provide direction and leadership within the UTM Library, exploring emerging trends in information literacy and pedagogical best practices. As well they will investigate the integration of new teaching/classroom technologies, and the delivery of instruction services for faculty, staff, and students.
The Head, Instruction Services works closely with teams at UTML to ensure the work of teaching and learning services and programming aligns with the UTM Library’s integrative instruction and reference cycle; may be assigned liaison responsibilities for a department.
The Head, Instruction Services represents the UTM Library while collaborating with UTM campus partners and colleagues within the University of Toronto Library system.
Responsibilities:
- Manages, coordinates, and directs the UTML instruction program; works closely with library colleagues to develop strategic directions ensuring the instruction team priorities, goals, and objectives are realized
- Leads the development of curriculum for library instructional programs that enhance student learning and promote student success
- Coordinates the evaluation and assessment of UTML instructional programs
- Collaborates with faculty and various campus partners; implements best practices for pedagogical and instructional design, develops and modifies learning outcomes related to libraries instructional programs, and develops learning activities to enhance engagement
- Reviews existing Library orientation and instruction activities
- Contributes to the library profession through scholarly publications, presentations, and participation in the work of professional organizations
- Shares expertise and knowledge to support both individual and Library objectives related to instruction delivery and design
- Chairs the UTM Library Instruction Committee and represents UTML on tri-campus teaching & learning committees
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- A degree from an accredited Master’s level program in library and information studies • Relevant experience teaching in an information literacy instruction program, preferably in an academic environment
- Demonstrated commitment to the values of inclusivity, diversity, equity, anti-racism and accessibility
- Knowledge and experience working within a liaison model including instruction, reference and collection development
- Relevant and demonstrated strong and progressive leadership, with the ability to lead staff through strategic planning
- Excellent project management skills and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple concurrent tasks
- Demonstrated experience developing curriculum design, including the evaluation of instructional materials and programs, utilizing sound pedagogical approaches and learning theories
- Knowledge of, and a strong commitment to the ACRL Information Literacy Competency Standards and Framework for Information Literacy as well as knowledge of current instructional and educational technologies
- Demonstrated experience working collaboratively as part of a team
- Familiarity with current trends in academic libraries and higher education, and in innovative approaches to information literacy instruction
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills; ability to communicate and collaborate with diverse audiences and networks
- Strong evidence of a growth mindset: a librarian who demonstrates flexibility, creativity and resilience
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Demonstrated teaching ability in an academic library environment
- Experience in the development of curriculum design
- Project management in an academic library
Salary and Terms of Appointment: This is a permanent status stream position.
It is anticipated that this position will be filled at the Librarian II or III level, subject to review and experience. Minimum Salary: LIB II: $74,553; LIB III: $95,411 (Salary is dependent on rank at hire and qualifications).
