Head, User Services, Librarian II or III

Appointment Type: Permanent, 35 hours per week 

Classification & Hiring Range: It is anticipated that this position will be filled at Librarian II (minimum $74,553/year) or Librarian III (minimum $95,411/year). Rank and compensation will be commensurate with experience.

Position Summary:

The John W. Graham Library is recruiting a Head, User Services, Librarian II or III to join an enthusiastic team of user-centred librarians, library technicians, and student assistants. Our ideal candidate is a collaborative lifelong learner with a deep commitment to fostering an excellent student experience through the lenses of equity, diversity, inclusion, anti-racism, decolonization, and sustainability. With an emphasis on information literacy instruction, liaison and outreach, and public services management, this is a key academic position in both the library and Trinity College. 

The John W. Graham Library embodies nearly two centuries of vision, energy, and commitment to the academic enterprise of Trinity College. The Library serves Trinity’s undergraduate Arts and Science students, Trinity and Wycliffe alumni, and the greater University of Toronto and Anglican Church communities who seek our resources. 

Trinity College is a vibrant and diverse academic community with a rich history and excellent local and international reputation. Since its founding in 1851, the College has valued and fostered a high level of academic achievement with some 2,000 currently registered students, 450 of whom live at the College. The Trinity College grounds comprise spectacular historic buildings, and the College is among the most prestigious colleges on the St. George Campus of the University of Toronto. Trinity’s campus currently consists of four main buildings and is located in the central Toronto downtown core, steps from the Bloor-St. George subway and Queen’s Park. 

Key responsibilities (but not limited to): 

Information Literacy Instruction & Research Support 

• Development and delivery of information literacy instruction (both in class and extracurricular/drop-in) with special focus on Trinity’s first-year undergraduate courses and undergraduate interdisciplinary programs (International Relations; Ethics, Society & Law) and the Munk School of Global Affairs; liaison with Trinity and Munk School teaching staff 

• Provision of in-depth research assistance for students, faculty, and others at the University of Toronto 

• Development of strategic directions in information literacy instruction at Graham Library in collaboration with other members of the library instruction team. 

Liaison & Outreach 

• Provision of research assistance and support to first-year students through the University of Toronto’s Personal Librarian program 

• Liaison and collaboration with academic support services locally at Trinity College 

• Contributions to outreach and promotion initiatives to highlight collections and services, including provision of newsletter content 

• Collaboration as appropriate with other librarians in the UTL system, including service on standing committees 

Management 

• Management of 2.5 FTE library technicians, including the public services staff at the circulation desk; indirect supervision of approximately twenty casual student staff 

• Assessment of public services and quality of service provision

• Collection and coordination of public services and instruction statistics to support reporting to College administration and University of Toronto Libraries 

• Collaboration with the Library Director on organizational planning initiatives, including strategic planning and policy development in areas of responsibility 

Collection Management 

• Development of an evolving research collection to support the College’s undergraduate programs, including collection maintenance 

• Collaboration with the Public Services & Community Engagement Technician in the acquisition and maintenance of leisure reading material 

Qualifications

• ALA-accredited master’s degree in library or information science, or equivalent 

• Excellent oral and written and interpersonal communication skills

• A minimum of three years experience in an academic library

• Demonstrated effectiveness in information literacy instruction programming

• Successful experience managing a team of public services professionals (preferred) 

• An advanced degree in a relevant subject area (preferred) 

Working Hours: 

Full-time 35 hours per week. Generally, 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Monday to Friday; however, flexibility in hours is required due to the nature of working with students, and occasional evening or weekend work will be required to accommodate the student schedule and library events. Overtime may be required during peak periods.
