Position description
Mount Allison University Libraries and Archives invites applications from qualified candidates for the position of Teaching & Student Engagement Librarian. This is a full-time, sessional position with a desired start date as soon as possible, and an end date of June 30, 2024.
Duties
Working with librarian colleagues, the Teaching & Student Engagement Librarian will participate in the following areas of librarianship:
Liaison and Reference Responsibilities:
- Serve as liaison librarian for English, Modern Languages & Literatures (French, Spanish, Japanese, Linguistics), Philosophy, and Religious Studies, providing collection development, instruction, research, and co-curricular library support to these areas
- Provide research help and reference services in person and online
Student Engagement & Outreach Responsibilities
- Plan, create, and offer information literacy (including media and other literacies) instruction through various means, including in classes, workshops, through the creation of online modules or other inclusive methods as appropriate with a focus on first-year, first-generation, racialized, and at-risk students
- Serve as lead and resource for information literacy initiatives and assessment
- Develop strong relationships and serve as the primary point of contact with student support units such as Academic Success and the Meighen Centre (accessibility services); increase awareness and use of library supports for students using a variety of inclusive approaches and platforms
- Serve as the library’s academic integrity liaison in collaboration with teaching and research librarians; develop materials and provide instruction to support students’ abilities to apply academic integrity principles
- Collaborate with other library units and campus partners to provide co-curricular programming to support student success
- Develop stand-alone content for use by colleagues for in-class instruction, Moodle, LibGuides, or other uses such as “how-to’s,” one-pagers, PowerPoint slides, and other teaching materials related to information literacies and student success.
As a member of Library Council, the incumbent will contribute to discussions, provide input, and may serve on or lead committees and teams. This librarian will also be expected to participate in R.P. Bell Library renovation planning. The successful candidate may be assigned responsibilities in other areas befitting the Libraries’ priorities and dependent on the successful candidate’s strengths and expertise. Shift duties for reference service will include 2 or 3 Sunday or statutory-holiday afternoons per semester. This position requires primarily in-person service.
Required Qualifications
- An MI or equivalent degree from an ALA-accredited library school
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Strong public-service-centred philosophy
- Ability to work well in a collegial environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience providing information literacy instruction and outreach to first- and second-year students; or first-generation students; or racialized and/or international students; and/or neurodivergent students
- Recent experience working in an academic library
- Fluency in French
Preference will be given to candidates with a subject background or experience in English, French, Philosophy, or Religious Studies. A Master of Arts degree will be considered an asset.
This position is represented by the Mount Allison Faculty Association and participation and involvement in scholarship, teaching and service is expected. The appointment will be made at the rank of Assistant Librarian. Salary will be within the established range and commensurate with qualifications and experience. In 2023-2024, the annual salary minimum for the rank of Assistant Librarian is $80,937.
