Law Library Co-op Position – Public Prosecution Service of Canada

The Public Prosecution Service of Canada (PPSC) is seeking a co-op student for the position of research and teaching librarian with the Library Services team. Please review the eligibility requirements for federal co-op students.

  • Position type: Full-time
  • Duration: 4 months, from January to April 2024, with possibility of extension
  • Rate of pay: $24.50-28.57/hr  (Rate of pay will depend on level of education as well as any previous relevant experience to the position: Canada.ca – Student rates of pay)
  • Location: Ottawa with a minimum of 2 days per week on site (hybrid work model) 

The PPSC Library is looking for an independent, innovative and tech-savvy library co-op student. If you would like to develop a broad range of skills and knowledge in library and information science this is the job for you.

The Law Library Co-op position is located at PPSC’s headquarters at 160 Elgin Street, next to the Rideau Canal and the Rideau Shopping Centre. This location offers easy access to restaurants, fitness facilities, walking/running paths and parks. We are conveniently located close to public transit making it easy to commute from all points across the city. Library staff work 2-3 days in the office per week. Two days is required as a minimum. 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Completing reference and research requests from PPSC employees with an emphasis on utilizing electronic and web based resources. 
  • Developing instructional materials, such as videos and guides on library services and resources using Camtasia and LibGuides software. 
  • Working on various projects including communications and marketing, and knowledge management initiatives. 

Candidate requirements

  • Must be enrolled in a full-time Master of Library and Information Science, or Master of Information Science co-op program at a Canadian university that has been validated through the Public Service Commission of Canada’s Post-Secondary CO-OP/Internship Program.
  • Must meet the minimum age requirement to work in Ontario and must be returning to full-time studies in the next academic term or if you are in your final year of studies, you must have been previously employed under either the Federal Student Work Experience Program, the Co-op/Internship Program or the Research Affiliate Program.
  • Knowledge of reference and research techniques and tools.
  • Have strong level of computer skills and comfort with learning new platforms.
  • Quick to learn, able to work both collaboratively and independently in a virtual environment.
  • Have a good grasp of taxonomies and search strategies.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills, including virtual presentation skills.
