LIBRARIAN FOR THE FACULTY OF APPLIED SCIENCES

Simon Fraser University Library invites applications for the position of Librarian for the Faculty of Applied Sciences, which consists of the Schools of Computing Science, Engineering Science, Mechatronic Systems Engineering, and Sustainable Energy Engineering.

Reporting to the Head, Fraser Library, this full-time, continuing position will act as a liaison between SFU Library and students, faculty, and staff providing research, instruction and collections support. The incumbent will promote library services and advocate for resources and services relevant to the Faculty of Applied Sciences across all SFU campuses.

The successful candidate will be an excellent communicator and listener who is motivated by curiosity, values collaboration, and has a demonstrated commitment to learner and user-centered approaches. They will actively contribute to the ongoing work of creating an inclusive working and learning environment with all faculty, staff and students, and their demonstrated experience will reflect their commitment to equity and inclusion.

ASSIGNMENT 

• Act as liaison between the SFU Library and the faculty, staff, and students in the Faculty of Applied Sciences:
  • Provide subject-specific research services and in-depth consultations for faculty and students;  
  • Develop and provide curriculum-integrated information literacy instruction;
  • Engage in strategic collection development and assessment on an ongoing basis;  
  • Proactively promote, plan, and advocate for resources and services relevant to the Faculty;
  • Promote sustainable systems of scholarly research, knowledge creation, and communication.
• Contribute service to the Library, the University, and the profession by participating in university governance and working with other members of the university community to enhance the academic and administrative excellence of the University;
• Participate in professional associations and activities, and work in the community at large through the application of professional competence or expertise;
• Develop professional knowledge, skills, and disciplinary expertise on a continuing basis;  
• Advance the values and goals outlined in the Library’s Strategic Plan;
• Option to engage in research activities as proportion of assigned workload;
• Other librarian duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS 

Required

• Master’s degree in Library or Information Studies from an ALA accredited program, or its equivalent; 
• Strong competence in recognizing, respecting and working effectively with individuals and groups with diverse perspectives and backgrounds;
• Understanding of how information is situated, critically evaluated, and assimilated for the creation of new knowledge;
• Ability to clearly articulate and contextualize the information ecosystem in the provision of research and learning support;
• Demonstrated ability to provide research support in an interdisciplinary environment;
• Experience with planning and delivering instruction, with a focus on learner-centered approaches and reflective teaching practices;
• Demonstrated commitment to equity, inclusion, and decolonization;
• Knowledge of practices and trends in collection development and academic publishing;
• Strong evidence of proactive approaches to collaboration and relationship building with colleagues and community; 
• Exceptional interpersonal and communications skills (oral and written). These skills include but are not limited to strong listening skills, a collaborative approach, and the curiosity and willingness to ask questions; 
• Strong potential to be an engaged academic citizen including familiarity with the roles of collective agreements and governance in post-secondary settings;
• Ability to establish priorities and maintain a balance between short and long-term goals

Preferred: 

• Academic background or equivalent experience in the Applied Sciences or a related discipline;
• Experience with collection development in an academic setting;
• Evidence of engagement and ongoing contributions to the field of librarianship.

This is a full-time continuing Librarian position, with an anticipated start date in February 2024.
