Role Description
Western Libraries invites applications to the following two positions:
- one (1) 1-year Term Appointment of a Teaching and Learning Librarian, supporting disciplines within the Social Sciences, starting July 2024 within Teaching and Learning team.
- one (1) [Continuing Track Appointment] of a Teaching and Learning Librarian, supporting the STEM disciplines, starting July 2024 within Teaching and Learning team.
Teaching and Learning (T&L) team members are associated with one or more disciplinary communities of practice in Western Libraries. Both positions report to the Head, Teaching and Learning.
T&L Librarians design, deliver and assess a variety of online and in-person, synchronous and asynchronous, accessible learning experiences that deliver our Library Curriculum in support of curricular, co-curricular and academic activities of Western students and teaching faculty. Teaching and Learning Librarians collaborate with colleagues across Western Libraries to ensure the provision of integrated, user-centred library services that support student learning, teaching excellence and recognized research.
Responsibilities:
- Contribute to the development and implementation of a library instruction plan grounded in epistemic justice to support the curricular, co-curricular and academic activities of Western.
- Collaborate closely with campus stakeholders across the curriculum cycle at the institutional, faculty/departmental and course level.
- Design and deliver effective face-to-face and online learning experiences, including the provision of research consultations and the creation of a variety of learning objects, e.g. lesson plans, rubrics and assignments. Also includes the development of knowledge justice programming as articulated in our Library Curriculum (https://www.lib.uwo.ca/teaching/curriculum.html).
- Contribute disciplinary expertise for the teaching and learning context relating to Social Sciences (Term Appointment) or STEM (Continuing Track Appointment). Collaborate with colleagues across the core user functions and through the Social Science or STEM disciplinary community of practice. This could include coordination and contribution to disciplinary initiatives, activities, and projects as appropriate.
- Understand and effectively apply various teaching theories and pedagogies in support of multiple learning preferences and access needs.
- Develop and administer appropriate assessment measures to evaluate student learning.
- Identify, evaluate and recommend teaching and learning technologies to support student learning.
- Iterate existing and future projects in response to assessment in order to improve user outcomes.
- Organize and deliver professional development for Western University faculty and staff in epistemic justice, library research, innovative pedagogies and/or technologies related to teaching and learning.
- Serve as a contributing member of Western Libraries’ Teaching and Learning team, including attending regular meetings and assisting with ongoing operational planning and assessment.
- Represent Western Libraries at campus events and professional meetings and conferences.
Qualifications and Experience
Required:
- Master’s degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association (ALA), or equivalent degree, or a PhD degree in library and information science, or equivalent degree
- Experience with teaching, consultation, and/or curricular design
- Familiarity with technologies that are used to support student learning
- Experience with equity, diversity, inclusion, decolonization, and/or Indigenization work
- Analytical and problem-solving skills
- Excellent organizational skills to set and balance priorities, manage competing deadlines, and take on multiple projects and responsibilities
- Ability to work independently and as a team member
- Initiative, innovation, resourcefulness, and flexibility in order to develop relationships across Western Libraries and beyond, particularly with various academic departments
- Excellent communication skills
Preferred:
- A relevant degree or work experience in a Social Science or STEM discipline
- Knowledge of disciplines within Social Science or STEM, including research methods and resources such as systematic and scoping reviews
- Knowledge of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) and its application to post-secondary teaching and learning

Librarians and Archivists have responsibilities related to Professional Practice, Academic Activity, and Service to the academy and profession. Terms and conditions of employment, including salary and benefits, are governed by the Librarians and Archivists Collective Agreement. Rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The 2023-24 annual salary minimum for each rank is as follows: General Librarian – $64,123; Assistant Librarian – $70,570; Associate Librarian – $81,706; Senior Librarian – $98,115. Western offers a comprehensive benefit package including, but not limited to, extended health, dental, vision and pension.
