Position Summary
Reporting to the Director, Library and Learning Centre, the Copyright Services Librarian provides expertise and leadership for copyright awareness, education, and compliance initiatives for the College community. The incumbent develops and delivers comprehensive copyright services for the College including preparing and communicating policies, guidelines, and procedures; advising and educating faculty and all other members of the College community on copyright matters, and implementing and enhancing existing copyright infrastructure and systems, including the College’s electronic reserves service, to provide centralized administration of copyright queries, clearances and licenses.
Responsibilities
- Creates and disseminates College copyright policies, guidelines, and procedures to the College community.
- Addresses queries on copyright, fair dealing, licenses, permissions, intellectual property, and related matters from the College community.
- Offers expert advice on copyright matters relevant to academic delivery, including classroom use, learning management systems, and instructional technologies.
- Provides specific copyright guidance for library collections, services, and projects.
- Designs and delivers instruction on copyright and related issues This includes one-on-one and group consultations with faculty, students, and researchers, as well as creating educational resources such as webpages, videos, and guides.
- Negotiates and facilitates copyright permissions, clearances, and licenses to ensure compliance with copyright legislation.
- Oversees the planning, operation, delivery, and enhancement of Copyright Services for the College.
- Collaborates closely with the Senior Library Technician for Copyright & Special Projects and the Librarian – Open Educational Resources and Digital Projects to ensure efficient logging, processing, and tracking of queries, clearances, and licenses, as well as compiling and analyzing data and statistics.
- Oversees the coordination, promotion and maintenance of the Library & Learning Centre’s electronic reserves service, providing guidance and oversight for library technicians supporting the service
- Advocates for best practices and an integrated approach to copyright compliance through collaboration with college departments and external parties such as the bookstore and printing services.
- Monitors and stays updated on legislative developments in copyright, fair dealing, intellectual property, licensing, open access, and related matters. Ensures the Director is up-to-date with key changes.
- Participates in internal library and College committees and task forces to provide advice and direction on copyright issues and trends.
- Engages with external library, college, university, consortium, provincial, and national programs and committees specific to copyright as needed.
- Liaises with other college and university copyright professionals and external copyright groups to stay current, identify best practices, and share information.
- Performs other related and librarian duties as assigned.
- Participates in reflective practice for continued learning and development
Qualifications/Experience
- Master’s degree in Library Science or Information Studies from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited institution
- Minimum of three years professional librarian experience
- Experience as an academic librarian or related copyright experience
- Knowledge of the copyright regulatory environment in Canadian higher education institutions.
- Awareness of current progressive practices in copyright management, including open licensing.
- Evidence of high level of critical and analytical skills in resolving issues of legal complexity
- Demonstrated ability to exercise excellent judgment when responding to sensitive policy questions and issues
- Proven client-focused approach to public service.
- Demonstrated excellence in oral and written communication, across a variety of stakeholder groups, and employing a variety of modes.
- Skilled in delivering instructional sessions in-person and online
- Excellent organizational and project management skills
- Demonstrated ability to effectively articulate and communicate complex legal and policy concepts to non-specialist audiences.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently,
- Excellent interpersonal and collaborative skills
- Demonstrated understanding of diversity, equity and inclusion to meet the needs of our diverse students, staff and college community
- Strong working understanding of guiding principles related to information rights and Indigenous knowledges in relation to Canadian contexts and practices.
