Your role
CBC Yellowknife is seeking a Media Librarian to join our team. As a media librarian, you play a critical role in organizing production material at the point of ingestion to ensure the application of accurate and controlled metadata which enables content to be searchable and discoverable, which further facilitates access to content/media to journalists.
You enjoy working in a fast-paced technically challenging environment and have a strong understanding of file-based production workflow, systems and tools.
You have an understanding of media asset management principles, industry-accepted standards, best practices and their practical application.
You will further our original, enterprise, and investigative storytelling and ensure we are talking about what matters most to people throughout Northern Canada. This will require you to be innovative and try new things while inspiring others to do the same.
As the industry shifts, local news and community storytelling is more important than ever. You will understand the diverse and dynamic population in Canada’s North and the importance of reflecting all diverse communities in our content. You will set a new benchmark in editorial leadership around community stories, both by reporting on them and reporting from them.
We are looking for a candidate with the following:
- Deep knowledge of and connection to Northern and Indigenous communities in Canada including a demonstrated awareness of cultural/geographical concerns and realities.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal skills, strong inter-departmental knowledge, and the ability to multitask are all required.
- Technical knowledge of recording media is an asset.
- Knowledge of or experience cataloging digital collections.
- Knowledge of CBC/Radio-Canada programming policies and journalistic standards and practices is an asset.
- Knowledge of CBC/Radio-Canada programming.
- Familiarity with, or ability to learn, CBC internal systems including Avid Interplay, Dalet, Synology, iNews, Medoc-Eureka, TVNLS.
- Thorough understanding of preservation and handling of file-based media.
- Understanding of file-based production workflow, systems and tools.
- Excellent communication skills (written and verbal).
- Ability to work without supervision.
- Strong interpersonal skills working in a team environment.
- Openness to diverse perspectives and ideas, and differing points of view is critical.
- Highly organized and detail-oriented.
- Self-motivated and self-sufficient.
- Ability and willingness to work overtime, evenings, early mornings, weekends and/or holidays when required.
- Two years of comparable and relevant experience plus a graduate degree from an accredited library school or equivalent education and experience is preferred.
- A Master’s degree in Library Science is considered an asset.
