Applications are now being received for a temporary Training Librarian position in the Service Excellence Department with the Markham Public Library. The position is currently located at the Administration Centre. (Note: work location is subject to change). 

VISION FOR THE POSITION

The Training Librarian is a highly organized individual with a passion for instructional design & facilitation.  They enjoy working with people, fostering their learning & development. They are creative, dynamic & knowledgeable about adult learning, training delivery & the development needs of Library staff. 

The incumbent is a creative, skilled problem-solver who designs unique solutions to staff training needs.  Works collaboratively, has a high level of energy & engages others in the learning process through their enthusiasm & commitment. Works under tight deadlines, manages large volumes of work effectively & enjoys working on multiple priorities simultaneously. Is an exceptional communicator, particularly comfortable speaking to groups & individuals. Highly innovative with ability to create processes as they go. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Coordinates Learning Opportunities 

  1. Under the supervision of the Manager, coordinates staff learning opportunities. Assists in determination of MPL’s training needs. Develops strategies addressing needs & implements training solutions as required.
  1. Coordinates with external vendors providing training facilitation. Prepares required documentation & ensures all program administrative requirements are met. 
  1. Coordinates logistics for staff training. Includes coordinating a system training schedule, preparing all required administrative documentation (e.g. attendance rosters), arranging for facility set-up and preparing the required supplies & equipment to deliver the training appropriately. 
  1. Books City, MPL & external teaching spaces.
  1. Coordinates MPL’s New Staff Orientation Day & assists in developing new employee onboarding plans. Coordinates onboarding content for new staff through MPL Edu (online learning tool).
  1. Supports training related to the roll-out of new staff procedures & processes.

Instructional Design

  1. As required, designs internal instructional programs for staff. Incorporates adult learning models to ensure worthwhile learning experiences that enhance staff skills development. 
  2. Supports the use of online training, including maintenance of MPL’s eLearning modules. Explores emerging training delivery formats to determine potential use. 
  3. As required, coordinates with system staff to provide peer & internal training. Works with staff to develop, facilitate, administer & assess internal training.

Administers LMS

  1. Administers the MPL Learn Centre sub-site. Develops database content, maintains & inputs staff training records, loads staff development plans & maintains the accuracy of database content. 

Facilitation 

  1. Facilitates staff training programs, creating engagement through their enthusiastic content delivery.
  2. Coordinates the purchase of materials required for training facilitation.

Other Duties
 

  1. Maintains Library training statistics & prepares statistical and/or analytical reports as required.
  2. Performs other duties as required. 

QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited University, or an equivalent advanced degree. Preferred background education in Adult Learning or related field of study. 
  1. Minimum of 1 to 3 years’ related library experience. 
  1. Experience & additional educational qualifications in Training, Instructional Design, Organizational Development or Adult Learning preferred. 

DEMONSTRATED SKILLS

  1. Exceptional communication skills, including superior public speaking skills & experience, and the ability to write effective, persuasive reports.
  1. Exemplary instructional skills required. Ability to effectively deliver training curricula in an engaging manner to staff at various skill levels. 
  1. Strong technology & social media skills required. 
  1. Excellent creativity, strategic thinking & problem solving skills.  
  1. Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities & high volumes of work within tight timelines.

Note: The contract period is up to February 23, 2027.  

Please note that Markham Public Library is open seven days per week, and regular weekend work is required. Employees hired after December 20, 2004, have a work week that extends from Monday to Sunday. Work location may be subject to change.
